Susan, and an FYI in general as well. You don't have to create a coupon period on smashwords to get review copies out. If you go to your book page, you can download the book for for free (its yours) in any format available and save it to your computer. You can then attach the file to an email and send it to a reviewer as well. It may be a little more work, but if you intend to sell your books, creating a coupon period will mean other potential buyers could download for free as well. That's not necessarily bad either, but just a thought.

Doesn't a person need the coupon code to be able to download for free? Potential buyers won't be given the code, only reviewers I send it to. Isn't that how it works?

I personally have yet to offer any coupons myself, but I have downloaded my own books from there, and I was just trying to speak from that end. For all I know, there could be something I missed about the coupons that will allow you to offer them to specific people. I just assume that the coupons aren't that specific, and I could be wrong about that. As for the downloading yourself, all you have to do is be logged into your account and go to your book page. Hope that clarifies it a little more
