How often do you buy books? Every week/month/few times a year?

message 2: by Kim (new)

Kim It used to be every week but I was running out of room not to mention costs. Now it's maybe once a month and more likely to be on Kindle rather than physical.

It's probably once a month now, I like buying books but I'm more inclined to buying an ebook now its easier, cheaper and I have not more bookshelf space

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to buy several books every week, but after a while I realized I was spending too much money. Now it's a couple new books every month :)

message 5: by Franky (new)

Franky I probably buy about two or three books a month. I always feel like I'm buying way more books than I can possibly keep up with because I already have ones that I've purchased in the past that I haven't gotten to. I have scores of books that I've gotten from used books sales, too. To me, though, it is fun to go and just look around at Barnes and Noble and browse interesting reads.

message 6: by V. (new)

V. | 107 comments The Book Depository is the worst thing my bank account has seen in years. Every couple of weeks I put in an order for 3-4 books. Inevitably I have books sitting around on my shelves which are as yet unread, but I figure that's half the fun of having my own library- I can pick something new off my shelves. Space is a bit of an issue- I'm about to put in a large corner shelving unit to remove the two-cubic-metre pile of books sitting in the middle of my floor.

my biggest problem is 'One-Click' purchases on the kindle

message 8: by Kim (new)

Kim Easy - keep your wifi off

Michael (knowledgelost) | 1255 comments Mod
I normally do, i use the kindle store via iphone or ipad

message 10: by Kim (new)

Kim Hahaha you do it to yourself. I'd get that app but I have enough books to read already

message 11: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I buy books weekly, but I am trying to cut back. I have the same problem with the kindle. It's just too easy.

message 12: by Karen (new)

Karen | 17 comments I buy books every couple of weeks. Our county library has a retail outlet where books from all sections are very inexpensive - a bibliophile's heaven! I have about a dozen books on my Kindle, but I find myself always picking up a book instead and my TBR stack is up to your knee...twice.

message 13: by Lawyer (new)

Lawyer (goodreadscommm_sullivan) Ooooh. Too often. My wife says WAY TOO OFTEN. She says I should sell what I have. Wonder what she'd go for? Sorry. That was really, really bad. Couldn't help it. Shame. Big shame.

message 14: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) Physical books depend on sales. If Amazon has a 4 for 3 sale then I'm more inclined to buy some, or if a new book for a series I'm reading is available in mass market paperback, I usually buy it. I would say I buy books every 2 or 3 months, but I usually buy at least 4 or 5 at a time. I download free kindle books regularly. If I don't like it, I can remove it from my device, and it cost me nothing. I rarely buy books on the kindle.

message 15: by Veljko (new)

Veljko (_vxf_) | 52 comments I used to go on a big shopping spree every couple of months.

My ebook readers have changed that. Now, I find myself downloading samples every day - and, about twice a week, that translates into purchases.

I kind of miss some of that. ebooks have huge advantages, but I miss the trip to the bookstore. There were two bookstores in particular, over the years, where I always knew I could get good advice. You never knew if they had the book - and, more often than not, you had to order - but they always had good advice. Little, family shops that loved their work.

Said so, I would not go back. I am a huge impulse-reader and the wait was often long enough for me not to care anymore by the time the book got there...

message 16: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) I really miss Borders. Every friday when my parents and I would go out to dinner, my mom and I would go to Borders. Sometimes we would get books, sometimes we would just browse. The staff was always so friendly, and willing to help. It felt more like a small mom-n'-pop than a large corporation. I just don't feel the same way at Barnes & Noble. I miss the self-serve computers at Borders. I don't really like having to ask someone if a book is in stock. Also, the employees at the B&N by my house are really rude. I wanted to exchange some books, and the cashier had a snotty attitude with me.

message 17: by Sandie (new)

Sandie | 39 comments I tend to go on sprees where I buy a lot of used books off amazon every couple months or so. I went through one of those recently and it drove my roommates crazy. Most of the time though I tend to buy a couple new books or ebooks a month depending on what is out. While I say this there are moments were I have impulse buys like pretty every time I walk into a bookstore or if I just get into this mood to read a particular story I automatically purchase it for my nook.

I miss Borders too. I don't like how you can't look up books yourself either. The last time I just used the internet on my phone to look a book up rather than ask one of them because I wanted to do it myself. The atmosphere at Borders was so much better than at Barnes and Noble and Borders had better coupons.

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Willis I buy books very rarely. In general, if the book I want to read is available at the library, I don't buy it. However, I will buy books for my Kindle if I feel it's something I might want to read again. I also buy out of print books that I can't find for my Kindle or at the library. I sadly just don't have the space for a lot of books.

message 19: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 289 comments That depends. At least one time per month, often more. Whenever I have groupreads coming, I'll get the books in between and sometimes I have the need to buy books, which will be 6 to 10. That's every three month or so.
My mother is getting desperate too, because I'll be moving out at the end of the year - and where to with all my precious books?
Well, we'll see. I'm not much for e-books, so I'll stick to hardcovers. Bad for my money, bad for space. ;)

message 20: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey | 10 comments I buy books in sprees as well but they are based on some rules:

1. Wait for a coupon
2. Only get books that the local library will not get
3. Only buy fantasy or sf (typically you can get thrillers and mysteries in the library)

I tend to get books in bunches when I do buy them 3 or 4 at a time.

The problem I have (like many here) is that I have a lot of books and not a lot of room to keep them.

Secondly I have the problem of not reading the new ones right away -- its a kiss of death IMHO. If you get a new book in a store -- read it soon or it will go on the shelf and its very hard to them read it later.

Kim Jeffrey wrote: "Secondly I have the problem of not reading the new ones right away -- its a kiss of death IMHO. If you get a new book in a store -- read it soon or it will go on the shelf and its very hard to them read it later."

I know what you mean. I've had books stuck on the shelves for years. I'm currently forcing myself to not buy any new books and read all the ones I have.

message 22: by Isha (new)

Isha (theliterarytrails) | 1 comments Lately, I have bought so many books and the old ones are still stuck on my shelf for years. Every time I buy a new one, I promise that I will finish the old ones and then buy any further but again...

message 23: by Melki (new)

Melki | 205 comments I probably buy about 5 books a month, and since I read lots more than 5 a month, you'd think I wouldn't have ANY unread books...but somehow, it just doesn't work out that way.

That is so much like me! Exactly same situation.
Whenever I'm in a bookshop I check out other suggestions on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ mobile phone app and it drives me to temptation. I need to stop doing that..

Brandie Sump | 36 comments When I can, I buy books but right now the library is my friend. Anyway for all those who loved Borders and miss it, I totally agree, they used to have an awesome comic book section where you could find practically anything but at Barnes and Noble, in my city, you try to find any comic book that isn't Manga, in the store, you are outta luck. When I found that out, I almost cried. Man do I wish Borders was still operating because it was so easy to find books. Also my B and N sucks because you can't find anything in that store unless you ask the people there cause its really disorganized. It does drive me nuts to go there!

Thanks for letting me rant!

message 26: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) B&N just doesn't do it for me. The staff (at least at my store) seems to be a lot of cranky older women. My Borders had what could be considered "hipsters" as employees, but they really cared about the customers and books so I liked them. The B&N employees all seem to have their panties in a bunch.

message 27: by Brandie (new)

Brandie Sump | 36 comments Oh So Agree!

message 28: by Franky (new)

Franky Ditto about Borders being so much more personal and reader friendly than Barnes and Noble. Borders was meant for book lovers in a way that Barnes and Noble will never duplicate. We have a few family small family run bookstores that are nice, but there hours are always so limited.

message 29: by Laurin (last edited Mar 17, 2012 01:42PM) (new)

Laurin (llooloo) There was a used book store that my grandma and grandpa used to take me to. It was great. The smell, the rows and rows of used books. I don't know if it's still open, I'll have to go check it out. The neighborhood that it's in is a bit sketchy, so I'll probably take my dad. I've been trading books on paperbackswap.com, it's a nice system.

message 30: by Moon (new)

Moon | 32 comments I used to buy books every couple of weeks, but I've put myself on a book-buying ban with very few exceptions for the duration of 2012. Actually it's did the trick of getting me to read the books in my TBR pile without destroying more progress than I've accomplished.

message 31: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) I went to a birthday party last night at an old polish social club. They were having a used book sale, and I came home with 3 books! It only cost me 75 cents.

message 32: by Pixelina (new)

Pixelina They have a yearly book-sale in Sweden in February so then I buy quite a lot. Other times of the year I try not to buy more then a few each month. + Tarot decks, I am hooked on decks.

Cool, can you read them too?

There aren't many used books sales in my area, but once I brought home a few books of Agatha Christie. That was one of my lucky days!

message 34: by Brandie (new)

Brandie Sump | 36 comments Yeah Tarot Cards! I love them!

message 35: by Melissa Hoyle (new)

Melissa Hoyle | 36 comments I buy books every month, sometimes almost every week lol. Space-wise it hasn't become an issue so far. I have 3 huge bookcases but every available surface in my house has books on them lol. My kitchen table is half buried in book stacks about a foot high. I don't feel that my buying is a problem because many of the books I have, I've needed them for one of my classes. So it's a win-win situation for me lol. Plus I'm not a fan of e-readers; I like the feel of an actual book in my hands. I can make notes, underline, etc.

message 36: by Lori (new)

Lori Baldi Sad news for the authors but I tend to buy paper books that are new only infrequently. I hang out at the used bookstores most weeks but still only need a fix of 2-3 books every couple of weeks. New books are purchased about 1 every couple of months. I do get gifts of books from time to time but that isn't a purchase exactly. I have so many books already that I would have enough books to get me by for 10 years!

message 37: by Dominique (new)

Dominique Almost every weeks, and at least three books at a time. Gosh! Guilty pleasure..

message 38: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 289 comments I think my amount of books would take me through a year if I read one or two every day. But as I (sadly) have to do other things than reading as well...
I'm buying mostly used books too. Otherwise I'd spend too much money.

message 39: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (vikki1) | 22 comments I'm not allowed to buy any more books until my TBR pile of over 300 has gone down. Bookmooch has been my downfall - can't leave it alone.

message 40: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3 comments At least every other week. I try to buy only one at a time, but I tend to buy three at a time.

message 41: by Navin (new)

Navin (Navino) | 3 comments 'Two books' a month suits just right. But then there also those days when I go on book-buy binge and end up buying 5 to 6 books a day online (this happens once in six months).

message 42: by Franky (new)

Franky I try not to buy books as often as I used to, but every so often I need a fix and see something on Amazon that intrigues me.

message 43: by Andrea (new)

Andrea On average I probably buy books once a week. Largely I buy from local used book stores and from Amazon- both new and used. I keep a list of books I'm currently looking-out-for with me at all times and I add to it whenever I hear about a book that interests me. I tend to buy a lot of books and have long outgrown the shelf space I have. There are books in virtually every room of my house, but, to me, it wouldn't feel like home without them.

message 44: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (soitgoes815) I haven't purchased a physical book in a while. I got a kindle so I could stop my physical collection from growing. They just take up too much space. I'm actually going to be donating a lot of my older books just because I don't want to lug them with me when I move. Now all my impulse buys are from amazon; If I see something good in their 2.99 and under section I'll buy it. Anyways, I still love visiting the book store, now I just make notes of what I want instead of actually buying it. My amazon wish list is insanely long now.

message 45: by Noel (new)

Noel This is an easy question. Though in my answer I can't provide an intercalary period.
I buy books whenever I find one that's worth buying. Which is very seldom. If i'm unsure about buying a book I usually rent them from my public library. If I like the book I'll think about buying it -it depends you see.
To limit my answer into a short three paragraph answer I'll have to say, perhaps: A few times a year.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I buy kindle books regularly. I use the library a lot. I seldom buy paperbacks unless they are second hand copies that I have found in opp shops etc (although I still love them, I just can't afford them anymore).

message 47: by Lorilee (new)

Lorilee (lthomas74) Unfortunately I buy way too many! I try to go to used bookstores. We have a great one that supports the local library. I buy probably 5-8 a month.

message 48: by Amandine (new)

Amandine (eeyore94) Wayy to many, more than I can read !
Fortunately, I've accounts in 3 libraries so that helps :p

message 49: by Melissa Hoyle (new)

Melissa Hoyle | 36 comments I commented on this post almost 3 years ago and my book buying habits haven't changed at all!! I'm still buying books on a regular basis, about every 2 weeks or so. I'd say I buy between 10-30 books a month, depending on what I manage to find. I do buy a lot of cookbooks, so that takes up the bulk of my orders. And many of these are used, so I'm not spending an exorbitant amount of money. I love to read so I feel like I'm not wasting money when I buy books, even if I never get around to reading them!!

Great that you've revived this discussion, Melissa! I've just purchased 4 books this morning, so it's timely coming across this!

I tend to use secondhand book shops - I'm lucky I have one that is about 5 minutes walking distance from my home. So my 4 books were the equivalent to an average new book - $23 (AUD). And I've found a few others not so far away that have different ranges (and one with a cafe, just to make me linger longer). Otherwise I tend towards Paperback Books and Hill of Content in the Melbourne CBD or Readings in Carlton. All have very good range of literary fiction.

I'm having similar issues with space, so I'm increasingly resorting to the local library. But it often doesn't have the titles I'm after (or they've been misshelved!). I can only do Kindle or iBooks for non-fiction, not sure what that's about...
