The oldest poem in The Departure was written sixteen years ago in 1996 and published in PN Review in 1997 'Southwold'. It came about from a weekend break in the Suffolk seaside town, where we were staying in Pinkney's Lane, above an off-licence run by Adnams my favourite brewery.
Along the narrow lane was The Drunken Boat bookshop, where I'd buy piles of second hand poetry and sit reading it in the large bay window of the flat, watching the tourists come and go.
The most recent poem was Austerity TV, which I wrote in a day over the top of another poem, replacing it line by line, a kind of palimpsest, in the actual press proofs, just before sending it to the printers.
