Here is what Elizabeth said:
"Still conflicted about this book, the point of view, whose story is privileged, and whether there are reasons to consider this a book about equity. Here is a thoughtful statement from the Association of Black Women Historians about the Help: "

Jenny Rastegar | 1 comments I disagree with association of Black Women Historians. It's not even accurate, You is smat? She says "You is Smart" and the White women have accents too. Since she made all of the main character's female, there wasn't room to discuss sexual harassment/assault. Also the one minor Black male character that was a drunk was also abusive, she makes it sound like it was a group of stereotypical delinquent men instead of one jerk. And yes Abilene's son was absent because he was dead. And it's not historically inaccurate to say that White well dressed society women made Black maids lives on a day to day basis miserable. So she didn't concentrate on men and the Ku Klux Klan. How many movies concentrate on females? Just do the Bechdel test on your favorite films. And I read the book and saw the movie, and anyone who thinks it was about a White girl wasn't listening, because clearly Abilene is the heroine.
