Say hi. Tell us about yourself. I'm Brad, the crafter of this mad group, and I can't escape the shadow of Ernest.

Barbara (barbarabook) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Barbara and I have always meant to read more Hemingway and found this as a great opportunity. I have ordered the book, and we are reading Fathers and Sons in June, right?

We are indeed reading Fathers and Sons, Barbara. Welcome to the group. Dive into the conversation as soon as you've read it.

message 5: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (barbarabook) | 2 comments I have read the story twice and I am still thinking about it. So many levels to deal with.

message 9: by Matt (new)

Matt Hi, i'm Matt/tadpole (i'll pretty much answer to any name that isn't derogatory). I found out about this group from Gary. Traditionally I have always had trouble keeping up with reading groups on this website because I am sometimes held hostage by my varied reading interests. Hemingway's short stories seems like the perfect outlet for me to change that trend, plus I need to become more familiar with him anyway. Of the few short stories of his that I am familiar with, my favorite is "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place." I love a good literary discussion and don't mind being disagreed with over matters of interpretation.

message 10: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) My name is Stephen and while I am not a fan of Hemingway's novels, I do love the short stories, especially the Nick Adams stories. Currently I am going to have to get a copy of the short stories because I think I sold them about two years ago.

You can disagree with me too.

It's a good edition for our purposes, that's for sure. And it does seem like there has been a sudden surge in membership, Gary. Which is good of course.

message 18: by Brian (new)

Brian Curtin | 1 comments Hi,
My name is Brian, but most people just call me Bri. I've been a fan Hemingway's short stories ever since an english teacher gave me a copy of his collected short stories. My favorite is "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"

message 19: by Gio (new)

Gio (giobannaschlitz) hi i'm gio...and i joined this group in its infancy to keep in touch with my friend brad when i moved away. i'm so excited to see this group grow as much as it has. i am a big fan of short stories...for a piece with signigicantly fewer lines than a novel, discussions can go on for hours on end.

i'm finding that they go on even longer when written by hemingway!

welcome everyone!

message 20: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I got the Complete Stories, The Finca Vigia Edition today, from the library.

Kevin J. Rogers (kevinjrogers) | 9 comments Hey everyone! My name is Kevin, and people call me, well, "Kevin". *lol* I've actually been a silent member of the group for quite some time--it's been a very busy summer--but I'm looking forward to chiming in from time to time, beginning a little later tonight. If you want to know more about me please feel free to check out my page here or on Facebook. (It's all there--to quote John Huston, "I'm an open book.") And I look forward to our conversation!

message 24: by Kevin J. (new)

Kevin J. Rogers (kevinjrogers) | 9 comments Done, Gary. And yes, I'll be catching up on posts very soon. It's a busy time until Labor Day (I tend bar part-time in Saratoga, NY, but it becomes very much full-time for the six weeks of racing season!), but after that I expect to get back into my usual routine. I look forward to our conversations!

is the area where you live part of the adirondacks? i need to look at a map to see where you are. i read a book recently by russell banks about that area, and really liked it. it was called THE RESERVE. have you read it? i liked it so much i bought another book by him called THE CLOUDSPLITTER. it came highly recommended. anyway, thanks for accepting me as your friend, buddy!

Russell is on Ken Burns film on Twain, because russell is into twain. i am into twain too. he also did an intro to Thorton Wilder's book THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY. anyway, back to hemingway, eh???

message 27: by Kevin J. (new)

Kevin J. Rogers (kevinjrogers) | 9 comments I'm currently in the foothills of the Adirondacks, halfway between Saratoga Springs and Albany NY, in a town called Clifton Park. It's a beautiful area, although I don't know how much longer I'll be here. Anyway, Russell Banks is from farther north, in the heart of the Adirondacks. (The Adirondack Preserve is enormous, by the way--the five biggest national parks can all fit in it together.) Parts of it, even parts very close to where I live, are quite rugged; I can go from a typical American suburban neighborhood to a pretty strenuous hike in a 45-minute drive. But the winters are COLD. *lol*

message 28: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) Hi, I hop Im in the right place. I'm Lisa from SA. I'm keen on reading Hemingway. Would like to try A farewell to arms.

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) Would anyone be willing to discuss it with me?

message 31: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Villines | 10 comments I'm always willing to discuss Hemingway.

message 32: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) Cool Daniel, I set up a thread titled read with me... Planning to read in october

message 33: by Ksenia (new)

Ksenia Martyniuk | 4 comments Hi! I'm new here. As I've already written in another thread,
I'm doing my dissertation on Hemingway's works. He's my favorite author and I'm glad I can combine work and pleasure doing the research. I joined this group mostly to ASK FOR HELP:I'm from Russia and it's really hard to find an English native speaker to carry out the experimental part of my work. So if anyone doesn't mind spending some time taking a few tests and speaking about Hem's works for me, I'D BE REALLY GREATFUL!!

message 34: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Daniels | 1 comments Hi, I'm Kelly. Hemingway caught my attention way back in my first year of college, and helped ease me out of pop writers like Stephen King--who I was beginning to tire of--and into serious literary fiction. Now I'm a creative writing professor and an author myself. Guess I owe a lot of it to the old man, flawed as he was.
