question
This is totally wrong.

How could anyone ever even be in that situation? The guilt over being in love with your sibling would be much to great. No one actully consider doing anything about it would they?

I dont think it was wrong, i have seen many brothers and sisters falling in love. It is in some peoples thoughts 'wrong' but in my thoughts it was a tender and sweet thing. Plus, i thought they would make a cute couple! It doesnt matter about who you are, or what you do, how old you are and what relation you have. People only care about 'LOVE'.
Love is waiting for us all somewhere :)

All of you people saying it is wrong are so incredibly close-minded and ignorant. You probably didn't even read the book. Luckily, your ignorance only proves and strengthens the author's point: that society is venomous and dictated by rigid "norms" that are never supposed to be challenged. Have fun, sheep.
I don't know. I personally never heard had any feelings even remotely similar to any of my family members, and I dont know anyone who has. But you hear about like people and what not being attracted to family after they havent seen them most or all of their lives. I don'tknow.
But I literally cried during and after this book. I felt so sad for the characters because from the beginning you knew it was like not going to last. It was inevitable that they werent going to be together. their love was so...well Forbidden. lol. But it was an emotional ending. Very heart breaking. but I like how it ended...even though it was sad.

Well, its not common but the situation and environment was the reason for the abnormal attraction. I cried at the end. The novel is well written and i concentrated on that rather than the delicate concept :P
They did feel wrong at the start, I think they really struggled. Its not like they didn't know it wasn't appropriate. They tried to stay apart but their feelings were too great. They never really felt like siblings due to their situation. If they had a normal childhood and went raising three children together and running the whole house, I doubt they would have fallen in love. I think it was a situational love that brought them together.
I thought they made a very cute couple and they deserved each other. I thought the ending was really sad, but it was a really good book.
love is love , if loving your sibling makes you happy who are we to judge , you couldnt be gay a few years back but thats not seen as wrong anymore , or atleast not as much. so if you love your sister like that i dont see anything wrong with it , i would rather two people happy than sad
this book was incredibly sad, i completely sympathized with the kids and it's fiction so i didn't mind the incest in it, it reminded me of "the cement garden" book. BUT if incest is not wrong anymore..where would anybody draw the line??
yes love is love, and love is great, but why is fraternal incest is more acceptable than father/daughter incest for example...why isn't there a limit, a line that should not be crossed, in public opinion i mean..??
the law is clear about all kind of crimes, including this..but why are people more lenient about some cases more than others? is it because Maya and Lochan had to replace their parent's in the kid's lives, because of their suffering? but why would that make it okay??

*Before anyone jumps on me, yes i haven't yet read the book but i do think i have valid points on the subject matter*
I do understand that the point the other is trying to make is that love is omnipotent and the world is strictly constructed under social norms but i still find the concept of incest kind of disturbing. I understand that the characters grew up in a dysfunctional home and that it intended to be a tragic love story. However i don't feel that people who feel incest is unnatural should be labeled as close minded. Incest isn't taboo simply because of societies opinions (e.g Homosexual love that doesn't hurt anyone) it's taboo because families shouldn't be taught that it is okay to have sexual or romantic feelings about eachother. I do plan to read this book and i may learn some more things i didn't know before about the characters and story but i still don't feel entirely comfortable with subject matter.

Because of discussions like this, Lochan decides to commit suicide at the end of the book.
This is a story about one of many species of love that society insists on calling sin for the wrong reasons. Read the book does not make you run to fall in love with your brother, on the contrary, open your mind to different aspects that make you wiser at the time of judging what is right or wrong.
It's getting worse the way the mother lives.
