What's on your mind? Share anything that's not related to books or the In Death series. Let's talk!

If anyone has any interest in historical romance, I'm reading a really good book right now called The Wild One by Danelle Harmon. It's the first book in her de Monteforte Brothers series and I picked it up on Amazon (Kindle edition) for $.99. I am in love with this story.

I have ecletic tastes, so I kind of like a smattering of everthing. For a while I'm into crime, then suspense, then mystery. It doesn't matter if the lead is male of female but I truly like well developed characters with human frailties. For instance, no matter how strong Eve is she does have a breaking point where she will go off and lick her wounds. At that point, someone usually Roarke, but not always, helps her get through it.

I love romantic suspense as a rule so it never matters which has the lead. In my early days, it was pretty much unheard of to find a female lead detective and when you did, there was something wrong with her. Eve Dallas was my first series that I stuck with that had a female detective as the main character in the mystery genre.

Thanks for telling us about this book. I am always looking for new authors to read. When I find a book that I like I tend to read everything they have. That is how I weed the good from the bad authors. If I don't get burned out of reading their books I will always look for their new books.

I've actually finished the second book in the series, too, and loved it as well. I'm making myself stop for now:)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I found a fairly new author and a chocolate affair where I live. They always have romance writers there that are trying to sell their books. Her name is Kris Tualla (she said to think of it as to all a good night) She does a Norwegian/Sottish. Then a Norwegian/American books. You can get the books on Amazon but I know I can't find them in the library.
The books are Loving a Norseman, Loving the knight. There are also a Woman of choice.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
I actually have A Woman if Choice but haven't read it yet.

message 9: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments It really pretty good. She said to read them in order, because the last line of a Woman of Choice says "I'm a prince." The first line of the second book says "Your a what?"

Good to know. I was thinking about the others but decided to wait until I read this one.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I have a question guys. I noticed I have really gotten burned out of Iris Johansen books. If you have ever read her books you know that they are really exciting and have a great story line. However, the characters are all cookie cutter characters. In other words, all the heroines have the same personality, as do the heroes and the villians. This has gotten me totally burned out on her.

The thing is I like Christine Feehan's books and yet she sort of does the same thing. Although the characters aren't exactly alike no matter what series she does the flavor is kind of the same. A psychic link that can heal a person or keep a person alive etc.

I'm guessing the difference is Johansen has females that definately do not believe in needing anyone. I am an independent woman, but I also know that I am always going to need other people, both male and female. I don't see that in Feehan's books.

My question is do any of you totally dislike one author even though they have a certain skill. Then like another author that has a similar way about them. If you do, do you know why?

Sharon Michael Miz wrote: "Do you prefer mystery/suspense/thriller/crime etc series where the main lead is a female, like in In Death ? Or do you prefer 50/50, male or does it not matter?"

I like strong females as main characters but there really aren't many of them, unfortunately. They tend to occur more in cozy mysteries and while I do read some cozies, in general it isn't my favorite type of mystery.

Science fiction/ fantasy seems to have a lot more strong female characters than mystery in general and seems to be more acceptable there.

message 13: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael ♨Miz wrote: "That's one one the reasons why I've read UF/sci fi for awhile and it largely replaced suspense novels for the last two years. The only problem I sometimes have with this genre is that the line between strong, capable woman and mooing cow isn't always clear."

One of the first incredibly good SciFi series I got addicted to with the female lead was Weber's Honor Harrington series. He walked the tightrope for 'tough female commander' very well and left the reader with no doubts that the toughness was mental as much as it was physical.

I can think of several fantasy characters that managed that kind of balancing act very well also. But the mystery/detective genre, not so much unless you do get into some of the cozies. In fact, of the ones I follow, have to say Eve Dallas is the only one I have absolutely no reservations about at all.

The only other one I can think of that works anywhere near as well for me is Jane, in Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield series and that is more thriller than mystery.

message 14: by Sue (new)

Sue Starting Glory in Death today. Cannot beleive how quickly I got sucked into this series !

message 15: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael I can't remember how many books there were in the series when I 'discovered' it, 20-something at least ... and it is the first series with this many books that I read right straight through, nothing else in between. It was like indulging in a long vacation with favorite people.

I wish I could put my finger on exactly what it is about this series that has so many of us read it as you describe, Sharon. I never did this before and haven't since with any other series.

message 17: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael For me, I think it is the characters ... and the lighter touches. I can never keep from giggling when Eve has one of her melt-downs over shopping or going to one of Roarke's executive dinners.

Has anyone else had any issues with accessing Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ the last couple of days? Yesterday, I could get in for about four hours and I still get that message about it being out of capacity pretty often. Lastly, I'm not always getting my notifications timely and sometimes not at all.

message 21: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments I'm trying really hard these past few days to remember either the female author or the title of a book I read a year or so ago... It was written in the 90's and was part of a trilogy or perhaps they were four books, I don't quite remember and it was about a detective named Kate or something like that and a guy from the same department named Mike and they were, you know, together, but he was uncomfortable with this at work and I also remember that the series end with him kissing her in front of the P.D.
I know it's probably impossible for you to understand which series I'm talking about, but if you do please let me know!

Mary | 208 comments Hey guys, I was just looking results on google for Roarke and Eve and I saw this video in youtube about them and.... I don't know, I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it's good to have people like the series so much to trouble themselves into making a video, but I find the fotos somewhat creepy at times and completely unsuitable for them and there are definetely more suited actors for them...
Why don't you check it out and tell me what you think?

message 29: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
One reason I hope we never see a movie for this series is because we all have such strong views about the casting. I can see Ashley Judd potentially as Eve but not him as Roarke.

message 30: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I don't see Ashley Judd as Eve, then again I'm really picky about the right image or actress to play Eve. Roarke on the other hand, will always be David Gandy for me. That man is BEAUTIFUL... He even has the blue eyes to go with that amazing body. Yum.

message 31: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
I'm all over David Gandy as Roarke:)

message 32: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments The problem with Ashley Judd is she is getting too old, and frankly any actor you may like today in five or so years could be too old. The characters don't age, at least that fast, the actors do.

message 33: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Well, Jonetta you are right about our feelings for the casting being strong and yeah I don't think we would be satisfied with the result, if a movie was made...
Ok, I also like David Gandy a lot, but I think Hugh Jackman is also good as Roarke, in this foto at least:
As for Ashley Judd, I don't see her as Eve,too. What about Stana Katic?

message 34: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidid73) | 25 comments Hugh Jackman might work if they gave him the right contacts - he just doesn't look like Roarke w/ those dark eyes. :) As for Stana Katic, I'm not sure I can get past the immediate "Beckett" identification - I think it would be hard for me to re-identify her in my head, if you know what I mean. Also, if Eve is supposed to be 5'10, I'm not sure she's tall enough.

How about Jonathan Rhys Meyers? He's rated #5 on a "Top 10 Irish Actors" list and seems to fit the part as I imagined it pretty well.

message 35: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
FYI, Stana Katic is 5'9".

message 36: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I think s1 of Castle, Stana could pull off the Eve look. But I identify her with Caskett now so it's a bit harder. She's an awesome actress though so she would still be a top pick for me.

JRM has the Irish accent but he just doesn't scream Roarke. I can picture him as Baxter though.

message 37: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments You're propably right about Stana Katic, I identify her with Beckett and strongly connect her with Castle, too. However, I also believe she could pull off the Eve look.
Now, I may be a little prejudiced about it because I don't really like him, but I can't see JRM as Roarke...

message 38: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidid73) | 25 comments I think I must have misread Stana's bio as 5'6" or something...you are correct, she could pull it off at 5'9". As for JRM, I don't think I've seen him in anything - can't say I like him or not, particularly, but he has the look I had in my head - tall, dark, a bit devilish...bit of a rogue with polished edges. Anyway, I don't get out to the movies much so I'm not familiar w/ very many actors.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I am starting to get the series on audio. I am doing it a little bit at a time but can you help me figure out which ones are the most pivotal? I have read them all and probably have the majority in paperback, but without having to go back and research I want the most pivotal first. I know Naked, Divided, Portrait, NY2D. But what others do you suggest?

message 40: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
I think Conspiracy in Death and Innocent in Death are really important, pivotal stories. Eve is tested in both, for different reasons. Her confidence in her marriage and her identity is shaken. Whenever I do a re-read, these two top the list.

message 44: by Dee (last edited Nov 06, 2012 03:07AM) (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments Are there any others that are pivotal? I have NY2D, Innocent, and just ordered Conspiracy. I have Portrait on tape (not CD) I still listen to it all the time. What was the one where Eve told Peabody about her rape? When did Peabody go for her detectives badge? I just got Seduction which is when McNab and Peabody get together as a couple, but what book broke them up?

message 45: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 14926 comments Mod
Imitation in Death deals with Peabody's quest for her detectives badge. I don't know what you mean about her breaking up with McNab (any more discussion of this should be done using the spoiler feature).

I never can remember the book where Eve tells Peabody her story.

One other one I think is important is Visions in Death. (view spoiler) I get really emotional with this one.
