Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Hey, just what is everyone here going to read on the first full month of summer? Me, I don't know yet, going back and forth between book since I finished my last book, Wild Cards I. I will post once I decide on a book soon.

Kevin, would you be interested in setting up a side read discussion of
The Once and Future King since it seems popular but not enough to win the poll?

message 3: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments I'm starting two books today, both of which I'm leading a discussion for at two other GoodReads groups (what's wrong with me? I need my head examined): The Shadow Rising and The Silent Tower

I'm on a detour trip in the Honor Harrington series, though, trying to read through Crown of Slaves and The Shadow of Saganami and I just realized I also need to squeeze in The Service of the Sword before returning to the group read of At All Costs. Thank goodness they are all available on my Nook so I can read when and where I can.

I also need to finish the Riyria series with Percepliquis, but I doubt I'll get to that book until the end of July.

message 4: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dyarch) Started The Half-Made World today and I'm about a quarter of the way through. I've been re-watching Deadwood lately and it put me in the mood for something with a Western setting. This fits the bill, but oddly the conflict between the Gun and the Line is also reminding me of the Culture-Idiran War from Consider Phlebas.

Should also finish The Wise Man's Fear, The Diary of a Nobody, and hopefully The Fabulous Riverboat this month.

Yeah, I'm up for it, but I will have to set it up on Tuesday if that is all right with you.

Sure. Whenever.

Adrianna [SypherLily] (sypherlily) | 59 comments I'll be reading The Magicians' Guild, and if I love it (which I'm certain I will) I'll read the 2 sequels. After that First Rider's Call, the sequel to Green Rider.
I just finished Elantris and now I'm worried anything I read for a while will be mediocre in comparison u_u

message 8: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Bidding adieu to Barsoom -- I finished John Carter of Mars and started Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire, which should be almost completely different.

message 9: by Kerry (last edited Jul 01, 2012 09:24PM) (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 46 comments I'm reading The Stand for the first time. I'm finding it rather disturbingly compelling as I keep reading and reading. Since it's the school holidays and I'm meant to be interacting with my son instead of curled up in the corner with my Kindle, this may not have been the best time to start it.

Technically, I'm also reading a whole lot of other things, but I've been struggling to get caught up in any of them. That certainly hasn't been my problem with The stand.

kerry I love The Stand its a huge book.
@Jaq I also loved Black man but not read Anansi Boys.

As for July I will be reading Elantris at some point but not sure what else in the fantasy genre. Lots of other stuff in other genres though.

message 11: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 106 comments For fantasy I'm reading The Shadow Rising, and I'm thinking of picking up Daughter of the Blood for a challenge, but I might just continue with WOT instead.

message 12: by Cecile (new)

Cecile | 61 comments I'm still at Best Served Cold (and bloody), it's already been a month (I'm not really a fast reader).
I'll pick something nice to read after that!

message 13: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) I'm reading Neverwhere and haven't decided what to read afterwards. I have one book left in The Dark Tower Series, so I might try to finish it this month.

message 14: by Robert (new)

Robert Mcgrath (bolamop) I have been threatening to read the Song of Fire and Ice books since August last year, though others keep recommending other books. Currently reading the Parasol Protectorate series.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished with The Wise Man's Fear, man that is a long book. I really enjoyed though and have added my name to the long list of those awaiting the 3rd installment of this story. Beginning with The Hero of Ages and hope to start Midnight Tides.

message 16: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments The Black Prism

message 17: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) Still working on A Game of Thrones. I absolutely love this story and would have finished it earlier but didn't take it with me on vacation, as it is a tree book and I was limited as to weight. Took my Kindle instead and read a bunch of other books, but am glad to get back to A Game...

message 18: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments @stephen I also enjoyed The Wise Mans Fear.

Also enjoyed Best Served Cold and the others by the same author. Games of Thrones also good.

Just read a Maria Snyder book which was very average Touch of Power

message 19: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) Jon wrote: "I also need to finish the Riyria series with Percepliquis, but I doubt I'll get to that book until the end of July."

Wow, for some reason I thought you had finished the series some time ago. Don't feel you have to read it just to "finish off the series" though. Life is too short to read books that don't appeal to you so by all means concentrate on the books you want to read the most.

message 20: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Discount Armageddon and, because I somehow hadn't gotten around to it yet, started The Sorcerer's House by Gene Wolfe. He's one of my all-time favorite authors, but I need to be in the right frame of mind.

message 26: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1019 comments Finally finished A Clash of Kings last night. Took me forever. I thought it was great, but I preferred Game of Thrones because there were quite a few slow bits.

I'm not ready to dive into the next massive tome yet. I'll probably give it another book or two before I come back to ASOIAF. So for now I've started The Last Colony by John Scalzi.

message 27: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) I'm currently reading The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie.

Summer is a great time for ghost stories, isn't it? I have "Ghost Hunting" on my coffee table.

Aildiin Reading A Fortress of Grey Ice by J.V. Jones.

Michael (inbeaz) Just finished Songs of the Earth by Elspeth Cooper, which is totally awesome. And I'm already about 1/3 of the way through Thieftaker by D.B. Jackson which is shaping up to be pretty good so far.

message 40: by Nigel (new)

Nigel | 10 comments Well I just finished Elantris and The Dragon Prince Heir, part way through Blood Fever, half way through the books of Barsoom, started the second book by Lyndon Hardy (got these recently second hand), also on the second book of The Rose Prophet and I want to read a book by Wallace Stegner called Crossing to Safety.

What do you think to the Hardy books, I read them years ago?

message 43: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennifer_crow) | 16 comments I've got Disappearing Nightly by Laura Resnick on my desk, and The Weird anthology upstairs by my bed. I'm going to try to read more short fiction--the heat makes it hard to focus on longer works.

message 44: by Helen, I· ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʟɪʙʀᴀʀʏ (new)

Helen | 3614 comments Mod
I loved Percepliquis. I've finally finished The Eye of the World, really enjoyed it but took ages as end of school year stuff going on. Next is Magician Guild but I'm doing the prequel first. After them Dragon Haven then more WOT.

message 45: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 164 comments I'm finishing Neverwhere, then starting on The Dresden files

message 46: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Lindsay I just finished The First Confessor and am currently working on The Hallowed Hunt, which I actually like better than the other Chalion books even though it's considered the inferior one. I've been working on The Crippled God for ages now, but I'm still plugging away at it. Also recently started ōܲ and plan on starting Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince once I'm done with The Hallowed Hunt.

Everyone seems to be reading books that I love. I'm jealous if you're reading them for the first time!

message 47: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 14 comments I'm just starting The Blade Itself.

message 48: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading My Life As a White Trash Zombie. It's a new and different take on zombies. Very cool.
