The best general biography of the Romanov dynasty that I've read is this one:

For one of the best introductions to the Romanovs, the later ones, in any case is Robert Massie's biographies on the Imperial family:
Nicholas and Alexandra, The Romanovs: The Final Chapter, Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman, as well as. Nicholas and Alexandra, Tsar: The Lost World of Nicholas and Alexandra, A Lifelong Passion: Nicholas and Alexandra: Their Own Story.

Massie is definitely the Romanov man.

I recommend "The Last Tsar" by Edvard Radzinsky and also "Tsar: The Lost World of Nicholas and Alexandra" by Peter Kurth.

I agree with Rebecca, Massie is the best jumping off point. Nicholas and Alexandra was my first, then I quickly devoured The Romanovs: The Final Chapter.

Am reading a fabulous book...."Little Mother of Russia"...about Marie. Nicholas 11 mother and the times before and after the revolution. It is really wonderful and informative.

There is a book - The Escape of Alexei, Son of Tsar Nicholas II: What Happened the Night the Romanov Family Was Executed by Igor Lysenko, Georgy Egorov, Vadim Petrov, Marian Schwartz and Antonia W. Bouis that you might enjoy reading.

Alexei is proven dead.

Robert Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra
was the first book I read about the Romanov's and I've been hooked ever since.

All of the above recommendations are good. I'd also add, "A Lifelong Passion". The Romanov story in their own words.
