Duane Simolke

I enjoyed them, but did not like them as much as the first two. They are set several hundred years later, so although they are set in the same universe and there are many connections, they are separate (think the Star Wars EU or the Asimov books, but a bit more closely linked). They are about the same length. I suppose that I enjoyed the style of Hyperion and the surrealism present in the first two, in addition to Simmons' unusually literary approach to science-fiction. These are IMO less present in the second two books. The focus is squarely on the protagonist and his relationship with the character Aenea. The first two books had a wider focus. And while I thought the first two books introduced or dealt with interesting scientific and moral ideas, this is less the case in the second two books (there are some interesting ideas, but not as many, and some of the scientific ones are inexcusable nonsense).
This is spoiler-free. Let me know if you want more info.
