I think this may be my favourite of Joe Abercrombie’s novels to date.

I went front initially sceptical about the setting to finding it absolutely fascinating.

I leave book very entertained, eager for a follow-up and craving pierogi. ]]>

Tchaikovsky continues to be as good as he is prolific.

It’s genuinely scary the rate at which he produces such compelling, creative and LONG (but still enjoyable) books.

And it’s always good having Sophie Aldred back on narration duties. ]]>

I can heartily endorse the audiobook version of this, having the songs that feature so heavily in the text sung really really adds to both the enjoyment and immersion.

This book is fantastic; it captures the feel of folklore whilst being original. ]]>

I’ve bought every edition of this book that’s been released; paperback, omnibus, LE (twice) and now audiobook and read each copy at least once so this is the 40k book I’ve read the most bar maybe Ian Watson’s Chaos Child so it’s fair to say I’m a fan.

Once I’d mentally adjusted to Adam Macey describing space combat I was once again fully immersed in the unpleasant company of First Claw. Aaron Dembski-Bowden gradually introduces the reader to life in their company in a deceptively simple fashion and I’d defy any reader not to be rooting for the dysfunctional band of absolutely horrific war criminals by the end of this book.

Lots of BL’s stable now ‘get 40k in the way that ADB does, and that’s fantastic, but he still remains on a different level to his peers.

I’m looking forward to returning to the rest of the trilogy before too long. ]]>

Broadly, I loved this. Myers is an incredibly enjoyable writer, whose prose is eminently readable and who dialogue works really well. The plot is good and compelling, and is surprisingly thought-provoking; I ended up getting rather introspective and existential at times.

Obviously all of this is leading to a ‘but. And for most readers, it wouldn’t be a ‘but at all.

There are many things I know about, but two things I know an awful lot about. One is how working in schools works. Myers seems to get a lot of these things wrong, but most people do so that’s forgivable.

Leo describes himself as a Sondheim nut. Other characters do the same. The text explicitly mentions the 2018 revival of company and how he’s memorised every microsecond of that production at the expense of other core memories. I too am a Sondheim nut. A Company one, specifically. My wedding vows were taken from its lyrics. The 2018 revival is something I think about as mush as the Donmar revival, which is a lot. I don’t want to give any spoilers for the book away, BUT THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH THAT THE NOVEL’S FINAL SCENE WOULD PLAY OUT WITH LEO MAKING REFERENCE TO COMANY AND A PARTICULAR KEY SCENE IF NOT OUT LOUD BUT AT THE VERY LEAST IN HIS HEAD. ]]>

I read this over the course of a sunny afternoon and this book was perfect for that.

It’s camp as tits, really jarringly paced and totally uneven. I loved it. ]]>
