Mmm. I just read some other reviews and one mentioned that it felt like nothing happened even though there was a plot and things happened. I feel this way exactly. There is nothing awful about the book, it's just...

The lead characters are okay, I guess, but I hated (vehemently) one of the 'quirky' supporting characters - Willie. There's quirky and then there's just plain annoying. I feel like Archer watched a few eppies of Dr Who and was going for that gender fluid spunky vibe that the writers capture so effortlessly in that series but it just didn't work.

Although there is a bit of a mystery, the whole thing is essentially a romance but Archer introduced a fiancée for the MMC. For no real reason. She's only in one scene and is quite insipid. I feel like she might be killed off somewhere along the line.

The magic component is pretty underdone. I assume the two lead characters will discover they are both magicians somewhere along the line. Actually I assume MMC already knows he is a magician but just, annoyingly, keeps denying it to all and sundry. IDEK.

I was planning on a big read of some of my books in my library with the word library or librarian in the title, just to see what percentage actually have anything to do with libraries or librarians. My cynical heart says it's all just a marketing ploy. In this case, it's a tenuous connection at best. The MFC gets a job in a library but that part of the plot has zero to do with the main mystery plot.

I understand this is the first in a series and this can often be a struggle for writers to get that balance of what to reveal and introductions of characters etc, but overall this was a bit of a disappointment.
