“Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda is a timeless collection that weaves together themes of love, longing, hope, loss, and the ache of waiting. Each poem captures the essence of relationships—the moments of togetherness, the quiet pain of departure, and the delicate balance between joy and sorrow. As I read through the verses, I found myself swept away by the emotional depth. At times, the poems brought warmth and comfort, while at other moments, they left me suspended in a space between sadness and solace.

What makes this collection so powerful is the way it holds you close, like an intimate embrace, and teaches you the art of accepting love in all its forms—the beautiful and the bittersweet. It's a profound exploration of the human heart, where Neruda’s words speak directly to the soul.

However, the one drawback for me was the translation. As a collection originally written in Spanish, some of the poetic nuances felt lost in translation. Certain moments didn’t resonate as strongly as I imagine they might have in Neruda’s native language. Nevertheless, the beauty of his voice shines through, and I deeply enjoyed the experience of reading these poems. Despite the occasional limitations of translation, this collection is a gift—a lyrical journey into the depths of love, desire, and loss. ]]>

Do not love half lovers
Do not entertain half friends
Do not indulge in works of the half talented
Do not live half a life
and do not die a half death
If you choose silence, then be silent
When you speak, do so until you are finished
Do not silence yourself to say something
And do not speak to be silent
If you accept, then express it bluntly
Do not mask it
If you refuse then be clear about it
for an ambiguous refusal is but a weak acceptance
Do not accept half a solution
Do not believe half truths
Do not dream half a dream
Do not fantasize about half hopes
Half a drink will not quench your thirst
Half a meal will not satiate your hunger
Half the way will get you no where
Half an idea will bear you no results
Your other half is not the one you love
It is you in another time yet in the same space
It is you when you are not
Half a life is a life you didn't live,
A word you have not said
A smile you postponed
A love you have not had
A friendship you did not know
To reach and not arriv

"हम इंतजार करेंगे तेरा क़यामत तक,
ख़ुद कर के क़यामत हो और तू आए"

“Dopehri, a poignant tale, unfolds the warm narrative of Amma Bi, an elderly widow and proprietor of Lal Haveli. With Jumman as her sole companion and Saxena Sahab as a frequent visitor, each afternoon brings a sense of tranquillity. Yet, as Jumman departs for his chores, eerie footsteps echo, plunging Bi into loneliness and a fear of mortality.

In this delicate setting, the entrance of Sahiba becomes Amma Bi's salvation. With Sahiba's presence, Bi not only discovers companionship but also embarks on a journey of self-exploration, rediscovering her identity and breaking free from the shackles of isolation.

“Dopehri transcends the realm of a mere book; it becomes an emotional tapestry, weaving the intricate threads of ageing, the haunting fear of solitude, and the spectre of death. Pankaj Kapur's narrative delicately and eloquently explores the multifaceted aspects of growing old, capturing the essence of this universal human experience. ]]>

Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis" stands as a profound exploration of the human condition, blending the bizarre with the poignant. The narrative unfolds around Gregor Samsa, a traveler who undergoes an inexplicable metamorphosis into a vermin, a transformation that becomes a metaphor for the harsh realities of human existence.

In the eerie aftermath of his metamorphosis, Gregor confronts rejection, alienation, and intense hatred. His grotesque appearance becomes a symbol of societal disdain, plunging him into a world of abandonment and triggering a profound sense of depression. The novella delves into the delicate fabric of existence, raising profound questions about the very nature of being.

Kafka's masterful prose draws readers into a visceral experience, prompting a reflection on personal struggles with anxiety, the pervasive specter of abandonment, and the broader theme of human treatment. The narrative acts as a mirror, compelling readers to confront their own demons and grapple with the complex interplay of alienation and self-discovery.

This literary masterpiece not only captivates with its surreal narrative but also resonates on a deeper level, leaving an indelible imprint on the reader's psyche. The profound exploration of existence, anxiety, and the intricate web of human relationships makes "Metamorphosis" a timeless work that urges contemplation and self-reflection. Kafka's narrative prowess leaves an enduring impression, making this novella a must-read, inviting readers to unravel the intricate layers of the human experience. ]]>

Rewind And Unwind by Sunny Raman Chhabra
"A thought-provoking read, meant to entertain and uplift.

••INSIGHT: The book is about Rishabh Arora and the course of his life as he navigates his youthful college days and enters adulthood. The story traces his growing up as he falls in love, forges friendships, and achieves his dreams, only to risk it all due to his wrong decisions and his ego. Will Rishabh get his happy ending?

••REVIEW: Almost 60-70% of the story chronicles Rishabh's college days, with the remainder taking up his progression into adulthood. The author has weaved the story and individual plot elements quite well to convey the central theme of the book, which is an attempt at making you question whether the track of our life depends solely on fate or is influenced by the choices we make. The book grew on me by the time I turned the last page. It is a slow-burner, that packs its strongest punches in the latter half, but leaves you compelled to think deeply on what really matters in life by the time it ends.

••STRENGTH: 1. The descriptive manner of writing helped paint a picture of the places, characters and events in my mind.
2. The ample dose of humour in the story hits just the right spot. Instead of invoking comedy through absurd situations, the author has used realistic events that will tickle your funny bone and transport you back to your prankster days in college.
3. The suspense and twists, especially in the latter half of the story balanced out the light-hearted humour nicely.

••WEAKNESS: 1. The narrative style of the author did not work for me, and felt amateurish at times.
2. The pace does not actually pick up until the last 20-30% of the book. Extra fluff could have been cut out to make the story more compact.
3. The plot has hints of the cliche college romance and hardships of young adulthood trope, but ultimately manages to shine through with its original climax and ending.

••TARGET READERS : Suitable for the demographic of 18-35, who are interested in romance with a touch of motivation and philosophy.

••GENRE: Slice-of-life/Coming of age/Realistic Romance

••RATING: 3.1/5

Range by David Epstein
"'Range' is an astonishing book, it takes on a popular worldview (in this case the 10,000Hr Rule towards specialization/being worldclass, the momentum of which is seen in the work ethos that's swept cultures across all countries), and proceeds to isolate the hype and dismember the popular rule in the face of 'wicked' unpredictable events (which are most real world events).

As evinced by most institutional forecasts' laughably woeful records on predictions with anything to do with the future, the world is a lot more complicated, multi-variate, and emergent than most people think it is. "
