This book felt like it added a lot of dimensions to my favorite parts of the previous book The Dark Forest -- I especially liked predicting and appreciating the hard sci-fi, and better storytelling and characters. I feel that Cixin Liu presents science and physics in a way that seems plausible enough that I believe each idea deserves further research and I feel intrigued, which is rare amongst sci-fi authors. I think it was very illuminating and future facing if you consider [spoilers removed] to be a metaphor for AI, because [spoilers removed] I really liked how it led me to take humanity's strengths more seriously, especially how [spoilers removed] ]]>

I feel this book did an excellent job of portraying both positive and negative parts of Musk. It showed the ways he leads, his desire to dive into technical details, really fun stories about the rockets, and Musk's focus on unusual things that matter. At the same time, it showed how impossible his relationships were, how frustrating his fights were, how arrogant he could be (and the mistakes that resulted), and the enduring trauma from his childhood. It's a warning as much as it is a biography, but I felt that I emerged from the book with a better sense of what does work and what doesn't work as a leader, and a more nuanced picture of Elon's past to give color to his decisions today. ]]>

I understand now how this novel inspires such an insane following. There are a handful of absolutely insane mechanics and mind-bending ideas and situations, that felt completely natural after they were explained, but completely subverted expectations when they occurred. After finishing, I just spent hours thinking about the book's implications. This felt like a generational sci-fi novel, that moved a lot faster and felt had a completely different tone and much faster pacing than the first book. ]]>

This was surprisingly whimsical, super short (< ~2 hour read), and even devoid of a clear plot, the antics were funny enough to keep me engaged. Definitely want to read The Restaurant at the End of the Universe which is rumored to be even better. ]]>
