Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler
"Butler takes what feels like an awfully long time to really get the narrative going, as well as to begin showing her depth as a writer. But once she does, it is hard to put the novel down. And to my surprise, I would come to appreciate the slow start a little more for how it shaped and informed the rest of the novel.

Usually for me, a slow and easy-to-get-distracted start is enough to make a 5 star rating a 4 star one instead. However, Butler’s science fiction parable, that reads like non-fiction in the year 2025, resonates deeply with our innate drive to build a better world out of the ashes we are given"

Buddha, Vol. 8 by Osamu Tezuka
"just finished and I struggle finding the words to describe this entire epic saga. I absolutely loved it. I very rarely re-read books, but I am already looking forward to re-reading this, Osamu Tezuka’s magnum opus

I read all 3013 pages in 7 days"

Brash, angry, and brilliantly written social and political commentary that dissects the ever-present grasp that the government holds on its people through the use of media, economic divides, violence, and censorship. Although some of this hasn't aged particularly well, its message rings truer than ever as the world's focus has become more and more centered around entertainment and constant media presence than it ever has before.

Bachman's stories may be a little more upfront and pulpy in comparison to King's style, but they're just as bold and exciting! I can't wait to see what Edgar Wright does with the material later this year, and really hope he doesn't pull any punches in terms of its direct and vulgar commentary.

A brilliant piece of theatre that also made me want to pull my hair out!

It's astonishing how influential this dynamic and concept is to so many different pieces of media, not just in their archetypes but also in the way they interact and fight with one another. I'd love to read this again to analyze the characters deeper! ]]>

Aside from some racially insensitive depictions that haven't aged well at all, I can honestly say this is one of the most enthralling and ingeniously concocted novels I've read from King yet! The way he builds tension and dread in this is so brilliant that he can briefly mention exactly what's going to happen before the brutality even occurs and it still somehow keeps that potently graphic and disturbing result that he wants the reader to feel. It's one of those books you don't want to set down but then something super gory and descriptive happens and you almost have to set it down to recuperate.

Beyond its horror elements, it also criticizes and pays tribute to storytelling itself by dissecting and questioning what it takes to make a really satisfying and crafty story, which I found super fascinating since this story is obviously so close to King's heart and perspective at the time. This obsessive idea that pain, suffering, and uncomfortability make good art plagues Paul's thoughts, as does this growing anger for his rabid fanbase that purely thrives on his more well-known novels rather than the important novels he puts his soul into. I'm sure these ideas are constantly consuming King's mind, as they do with so many other authors, but it's impressive that King is so effortlessly able to replicate that feeling to his readers in such a visceral and internal manner.

A masterclass in tension and a deep insight into King's psyche that not only shows his love for writing but also his disdain for the negative aspects that inevitably come from his work and popularity. The characters are iconic, the layered storytelling is masterful, the descriptive writing is chilling and grotesque, and the complexity of the dynamic between Annie and Paul is well thought out and believable. I would love to return to this book in the future to unpack and chew on it more, so I'll save my rambling for another time!
