bookshelves: between-the-chapters
The Highlander’s English Bride was long and convoluted. Sabrina and Graeme were constantly arguing with each other, and it became exhausting. There are only so many times in one book that I can read the same argument play out. While I did appreciate that the gender roles were reversed (the female love interest saving the male love interest), the kidnapping scenes were unrealistic. For example, Jackie spilling his whole evil plan like a Scooby-Doo villain was unrealistic.

The one thing I guess I enjoyed was that Royal and Ainsley did not care that Graeme and Sabrina were breaking proper decorum. There was no big argument or yelling at Graeme that he needed to “take responsibility like in some of the other books in the series.

“But shouldn’t a look at history include the good and the bad? Anyone can be a hero in good times. It’s the way people handle the tough stuff that shows what they’re really made of.

I liked the idea and concept. However, I believe the author left too many clues. From the very beginning with the prologue, I already guessed that Violet and Rose switched spots and that Rose was the twin who died. This was made further obvious when it was revealed that Joe, the love interest, was adopted, eliminating any potential incest.

I did not think the author did a great job of describing death. In the prologue, she almost romanticizes or sexualizes Rose’s death. It gave me the ick reading how Rose’s death was described and not because of how horribly she died, but how her dead body was romanticized (there is a troubling history of romanticizing women’s dead bodies). Furthermore, when Rose died, I thought the author could have done a better job of describing Violet’s pain and the severing of their twin attachment. However, she focused more on Violet’s own gains and interests, which I did not find very realistic.

I enjoyed the author’s switching between the present and the past as well as revealing different characters POV on the night of the explosion. I only wish she gave more characters a voice and had more chapters from the past.

While I was surprised by the last chapter and the book’s ending, I enjoyed the conclusion. The author created a beautiful conclusion with Dash’s death and provided the reader with closure.
