The Children's War by J.N. Stroyar
"This is a huge book, but well worth reading if you have the stamina for it.

Takes a classic sci-fi staple, alternate history, and takes it to the very bitter end.

What if the Nazis won World War II is a very common alternate history idea used in many sci fi stories, but this one extrapolates this idea with so much detail and heartbreaking realism, that you end up thanking our lucky stars that we DID win WWII.

The book already takes place in a time where the Nazis have won WWII and pretty much conquered all of Europe. America is still technically its own country and the last free country in the world, but has no influence or power over the Nazi empire.

There are few small pockets of resistance left in Poland and we see some resistance fighters struggle against the awesome juggernaut of the Nazi empire. Our hero is a disillusioned Brit who somehow ends up in the Polish Resistance and we see through his eyes just how dismal life is under the iron heel of Nazi rule."

This book scared the pants off me as a kid! Really messes with your head! It's a dystopia to end all dystopias for middle school readers or older. Highly recommended! ]]>

bookshelves: currently-reading, dystopia, spy-thriller
It's a stroke of genius on the author's part to write a dystopian novel in which the protagonist is a morally conflicted and compromised policewoman, Callie, whom you will absolutely root for.
So, why did the immensely talented Ms. McMillan have to resort to self-publishing it? Well, nobody who picks up this extraordinarily well written novel, which also doubles as a near-future spy thriller, is going to be in any doubt as to why. A novel about a pandemic, in 2021? Good grief, hadn't we all already agreed to pretend THAT unpleasantness had never happened, even while it was still going on? Plus, the protagonist, Callie, is a lesbian, which for dumb-as-rocks publishers means only other LGBTQ people would possibly be interested in reading it. I mean, it's not as if "straight" people ever have f***ed-up relationships in which real caring is all mixed up with manipulation and abuse and betrayal, right?
Go buy this book right now and read next week's headlines today, with deeply flawed characters you will love. ]]>

a mixed bag, but several thought provoking stories

These stories are only loosely organized around the concepts of quantum mechanics that have penetrated popular consciousness, which it’s safe to say no one really understands, not even the scientists. We know enough to be disquieted, though. ]]>
