My reading experience with The Midnight Feast was interesting to say the least. I had started and stopped it at least three times and could never quite get into it. I generally prefer Foley’s books on audio (the narration is incredible and the full cast really brings it all to life.) However, I did ditch the audio and finally tried the physical copy. To my surprise, I was able to finish and ended up enjoying it!

The first few chapters started off so strong and it had a lot of promise, but it began to lose me in the same section each time. The pacing slowed and dragged out (which I believe was mostly due to the characters and my lack of interest in them—not that they were boring, but more so there were so many to keep track of in the past and present), but by the final 50 pages or so I was fully engrossed and got such a kick out of the twists! Some I found to be foreshadowed and guessed, but some I didn’t see coming at all which was a really nice surprise. The way that the past got woven into the storyline through journal entries was clever and allowed us to have pieces start clicking.

My favorite thing about this book is also what I’ve come to love about Foley’s books in general. She writes the most atmospheric and creepy settings and this one with its Pagan Mythology/Folk Horror set alongside this ominous wood setting was fun. The book club ending 🤣 I don’t think this was her strongest body of work, but nonetheless I enjoyed it. I look forward to whatever she puts out next. I just hope we get something soon!
