This book was in desperate need of an editor to cut the fat. At 500 pages, this story could’ve been easily told in 300. The plot is weighed down by unnecessary description and context for events that, while historically accurate, have no bearing on the story. And even with all of that extra language, I felt like the ending didn’t fully tie everything together.

I picked this up because I wanted to read about Buffalo and Niagara Falls at the turn of the 20th century, and Belfer’s sense of place was by far the most enjoyable part of this. Anything else redeemable about the book was drowned out by its density. ]]>

Born Standing Up by Steve Martin
"This might be a perfect text to consume as an audiobook. It's just the right length and rich with detail. Martin reads this not from a standpoint of "Hey, look, I'm reading my stand-up memoir" but from a place of sincerity almost to a point of testimony. I've always liked his comedy in movies and TV (or at least always give him a shot with whatever new project he creates), but his writing is what truly elevates his œuvre in my mind. I'm glad that this book now lives there as well. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go rewatch The Jerk."
