I stumbled upon this book by chance at the library. I read American Dirt by this author a few years ago and was deeply moved by it, so I was excited to learn she had others. I had no idea until I started this that it was the author's own personal story - a true crime that happened to her own family. Even without that detail, this book would be impactful. But knowing that these characters were her real life family members made this a harrowing experience to read. It's so, so good.
