Bert Edens' Dead Orphans is a chilling, atmospheric collection of horror shorts, drabbles, and poetry, offering an interesting blend between unsettling realism and dark, poetically rendered storytelling. It has its moments of pure horror that are unforgettable, yet it is not without its flaws.
Criticism aside, Dead Orphans is an undeniably compelling horror collection. Edens' prose is sharp, his ideas compelling, and his ability to unsettle undeniable. Readers who enjoy grim, unflinching horror will find much to appreciate here—but those seeking a more balanced emotional ride may be entirely overwhelmed.
