In this first book of a new fantasy series we learn about asha who are young girls trained to learn to use runes to harness the magic of the elements, most are held in high esteem. They are taught to entertain & protect for a price but they also learn to heal & fight. The dark asha is not capable of using the runes as the others are & specializes in the art of death, these dark asha are often referred to as 'bone witches'. It is the purpose of the dark asha to rid the kingdoms of the daeve, a monstrous creature raised by the faceless to wreck havoc on the royals & their subjects. While Tea is standing at the grave site of her brother Fox she senses that he is still alive. Without knowing what she is doing she raises Fox from the dead to everyone's amazement. When a dark asha comes to her aide & explains to her what she is, she tells Tea she must go to Kion to learn to be asha in order to understand the gifts she has been given. The story unfolds as Tea recounts her travels to Kion & then her time learning to become an asha all while in the present day she is seeking revenge for her lost love.

This story has multi-layers while bouncing back & forth between what is happening in the present day & the story Tea is telling of her becoming asha. Tea learn quickly that being asha is not easy & fighting for what you believe is right may not always have the out come you hope for. This is a fascinating story about how a young girl grows to become a force to take down the most powerful of the daeve. I enjoyed reading this book & very much look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series to see what happens next..... now I have to wait.
