bookshelves: fiction, historical
I seldom give 5 stars. Many books are really good, but 5 stars is special. This one is a most captivating story of the Light bulb we all have used and are continuing to use. Mr. Moore shares the real names of the big stars in the story: Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, Paul Craver, Ann Huntington. The details of the controversy that involved awarding a patent for the light bulb included many others as well, some whose names are drawn from the 18th century, of whom we've never heard. I looked them up, they are real people not just characters in a story.
Moore also shares stories about other scientific breakthroughs that we live with daily. At the end of the book he has an exiting note that shares chapter by chapter , the parts that he 'rearranged' to make the story fit while keeping it basically very accurate.
A novel was a perfect way to tell the story.
How interesting that we have today LED bulbs and Hue bulbs and likely others I personally don't know of. as scientists have imagined new ways to accomplish lighting our world. ]]>

bookshelves: fiction, mystery
Harry is retired now, though still a reserve officer for San Fernando. He is in close contact with Renee Ballard. This book starts out with one crime to solve ( a murder), moves on to a fire, includes Maddie at college, (three crimes now) and picks up some more stuff. How realistic for a cop, before one thing is solved another gets dumped on your plate. Does Renee ever get any sleep? Rarely. However, Connelly wraps lots of things together, adds lawyer Mickey Haller for legal advice and the crimes are solved. Several people die, but after all, it is Los Angeles!Plus, guess what...we’re set up for the next story. 😉

Re-read. Very enjoyable. Of course I’d forgotten a lot, but the multiple threads of the story, Bosch’s post-op knee surgery details add to the setting of the scene.
Well done, Michael Connelly! ]]>

bookshelves: fiction, mystery
The Camino series is very different from the lawyer stories in Grisham's other novels. Theses stories have more to do with the writing and publishing industry.
Being a mystery reader, I enjoy the mysteries just as much here as in the other series. After all, I started out as a Nancy Drew reader many years ago.
This story is about a small island, near Camino Island and the history of the slave trade in the 1700's

Great history, good mystery. ]]>
