Since there's always a new book every spring, I think I'm going to wait until about Christmas and start a full series read through, but with all of the Patreon short stories, the hardcover shorts, everything. And try to read in order, so that I get the full murder board conspiracy vibe lol ]]>

Loved it. I am deeply invested and I might turn a wall of my house into a murder board. Waverly would understand. ]]>

I have no idea if my review would've been different if I read this when I first bought it when it came out, but honestly? As a Canadian, I'm so sick of American politics and, while this tries not to be about American politics Trump Eras Tour 1, that's what is it. And living under Trump Eras Tours 2, I just am sick of it all.

WITH THAT SAID.

I think most of my feelings are just the abject distaste I have for it all at the moment, as well as the constantly quoting of Lesson 1, as opposed to any of the others that involve action. But I suppose it's easier to yell online at Canadians. ]]>

This was a fantastic read, despite being a difficult subject. I know this book was published in 2022 (so probably written in the 2018-2021 range), but reading it in March 2025 was surreal.

I highly recommend it. ]]>

Looking at the reviews and my own reading experience, I think it might be normal to hit the 40% mark of this book and think there's no point in even trying. In many ways, that 40% mark existential crisis that you develop can be seen in a lot of purist environmentalists, where nothing anyone does is good enough. If we are not living in reused cardboard boxes eating grass, then we are harming the planet.

But if you push through, the message is not actually that. The book's message is that, yes, the world is in crisis and we are causing it. but that individual actions can make a difference. What's more, there's a lot of small, individual actions people can take. From turning off the lights, to reusable water bottles when out walking (instead of buying water), to reusable coffee thermoses, to less frequent flights. Buy in season and local whenever possible.

And also, you need to work out your own salvation on some things. I realize that my local greenhouse grown produce is worse than importing the same produce, but local farming is important to me - in terms of human rights, of animal welfare, and of the robust family farm. Canadian family farms are not taken into account for the footprint (and fair, it's impossible to account for everything), so again, I believe working out your own path forward is never a bad thing.

Some of the reviews on this book are rather judgmental, mocking family members who do things that aren't perfect. But I don't think that's the purpose of this book at all. In fact, I think that's missing the entire point of the book. ]]>

2025 re-read: my opinion hasn't changed. I do like Topari more now, though, and that he's presented in a different light being at home and with his own clan.

I've been putting off this book because I was waiting for the audiobook to release. But as I'm now behind by two books in the series, I decided to grab the ebook.

It's hard switching after 19 books, so I'm not 100% sure if I was following as well as I would normally because I am used to certain names said as opposed to spelled.

This is clearly a middle-arc story, so it's mostly setting things up. Still, I remain a massive fan, and I will absolutely be buying this in audiobook if/when that ever happens. ]]>

A cozy book that's perfect for cold, short days.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a woman in her 60s, going through marital and financial hardship, and landing on her feet. I remember years ago on Twitter a joke between a number of people about magical wrapping paper and Jane saying something like "I think I could write that." Well, she could and she did, and I'm so happy to have read it.
