4.5/5 Took half a star off for crazy chapter lengths and the fact this book has no forward movement or conclusion. on to book 2! haha ]]>

Enjoyed this and the other 5 of this side series. But this book was a bit... meh. Revelations were underwhelming. The end was very underwhelming and frankly disappoinging... i do not like things tied up in neat bows. It had some highs and interesting side plots. There were too many side casts of characters for my liking. By the time I got to some character again I had forgotten what they last did at times. This Esslemont book was harder for me to follow than others.

Malazan peaked at book 6 I think, of the main series. While no book is bad, I enjoyed 1-6 of Erikson's main series, and 2-5 of Esslemont's Novels of the Malazan Empire, the most. Assail felt a bit drawn out. Not as bad as books 7-10 of the main series though.

I DO love these... don't get me wrong. Part of the issue is my failing middle aged memory and my lack of time to read these in quick succession. But i do feel Assail was more a 3/5. Very much worth reading, but as a final novel, a let down. i was expecting more revelations more information about certain characters. etc. It can be hard after 15 books and two novella collections... reading a 16th book (18th technically), and trying to grasp what you are reading when past events and characters are mentioned. This is the struggle of Malazan. It is very epic. Very long. And unless you have a lot of free time and a good memory, it can pose a challenge.

That said, i plan a reread some day. But it might be when i retire ... lol ]]>
