While the author is correct that many puritans were pharisaical, and that others, like Hawthorne had a less rigid path to redemption [basically works plus faith] he misses the point that there were puritans who held the Bible truth that salvation is wholly based on the redemptive work of Christ on the cross and His subsequent resurrection. Men like Jonathan Edwards have been misrepresented, misunderstood and maligned for years but their message was grace through faith in Christ and works that follow to show the change in a person after salvation, not cause the change.
That Hawthorne was confused is evident, that the author(s) are confused is likewise. ]]>

I have heard of Pancho Villa for decades but really knew very little of him so this book was an eye-opener. Interesting life.
I was amused by the last sentence: "It was a bloody end to a bloody life, but despite the carnage, the fiery fighting spirit of Pancho Villa would live on in the hearts of many people for centuries to come." Centuries? He died July 1923. It's barely been over one century. It may be a little premature to say his fighting spirit will live on at least another 98 years. ]]>

I liked the book for its information and honesty. I did not like learning some of the negative aspects of Newman's life but the book was honest and straightforward.
It was interesting to learn that his second wife [Joanne Woodward] worried he would have an affair with Sophia Loren while they made a picture together. Hmm, why would you suspect a man you had an affair with while he was married might have an affair with someone while married to you? ]]>

I like these books. For what they are they are very good for the most part. Sometimes I am interested enough in the subject matter to learn more. Other times I am satisfied with what I now know. This book falls into the latter category. Kind of a strange sad life and death. Even the legacy he left has been marred by politics, agendas and biases. ]]>

Concise little volume on a great hero who unfortunately was not great in civilian life. ]]>

Solomon, the human author of this inspired account was rich, talented, famous and many other things that the world says are the trappings of success and happiness BUT... he wasn't happy, wasn't fulfilled and wasn't satisfied. He tried a multitude of things and each one failed and he came to the right conclusion and recorded it for us under divine inspiration - a personal relationship with God AND living for HIM ]]>

The Song of Solomon is part of the inerrant, inspired Word of the living God. If you don't understand it just continue to grow in grace and to study God's Word. For years I didn't understand the book as I had been explained to me as a love song between Solomon and the Shunamite girl - it just didn't make sense to me. Then, I had two different teachers in seminary explain the three-person view. Wow did that open it up. [Of course, they are many people in the book but 3 main characters.] The Shunamite pictures the believer, her beloved - a shepherd pictures the Lord Jesus Christ and Solomon pictures the world trying to woo the believer from the Lord. Seen in light of that information it all makes sense. ]]>
