Breakfast Wine is a powerful and immersive memoir that transported me into the heart of northern Iraq through the eyes of Alex Poppe, a Western woman teaching in a war-torn land. Over the course of a decade, Poppe doesn’t just recount her experiences—she invites readers to live them alongside her, from dodging earthquakes to navigating the emotional wreckage of personal loss.

What makes this book stand out is its honesty and sensory richness. Poppe captures the tension of being an outsider in a place that is often inhospitable, yet she does so with empathy, insight, and even humor. Her reflections on identity, resilience, and the cost—and reward—of stepping far outside your comfort zone are deeply moving.

At once heartbreaking and uplifting, Breakfast Wine is a deeply human story that lingers long after the final page. A must-read for memoir lovers, global nomads, and anyone drawn to stories of transformation in the most unlikely of places. ]]>

Havana Hangover by Randy Richardson
"Rum, Villains, and Havana Hijinks
Jackson Swift. He’s got charisma, movie-star looks, and tons of family money. He’s also got the only woman Tanner Ford ever loved. Obviously, this little setback ruined the friendship between Jackson and Tanner years ago. Which makes it more than a little uncomfortable that Jackson Swift contacted his estranged friend and invited him on a bucket list trip to Havana. Tanner doesn’t want to go, but things are a mess at home, and his inner Hemmingway fanboy vibe just blew up at the thought of being in the bars Ernest Hemmingway considered home while in Cuba. Jackson and Tanner’s Epic Adventure is about to begin.

Tanner’s a pretty easy guy to like. He’s relatable, genuine, intelligent but not street-smart, and prone to anxiety attacks at seriously awkward moments. He knows before they’ve even boarded the plane that he’s made a critical mistake agreeing to this trip. Jackson is a lying, egotistical, “I’m-too-sexy-for-my-shirt kind of guy who gets everything he wants. He’s the kind of guy you look at and think that life’s not fair. Their Cuban adventure starts to go sideways as soon as they land at a small airport two hours from Havana. Things only deteriorate from there.

The more time Tanner spends in Havana, the more he realizes he can’t trust anyone; not the woman he met in the bar last night, not the tour guide who supposedly has everything planned out, and without a doubt not his former friend Jackson. The former friend who left him at the bar last night and then began frantically sending cryptic texts at 4:00 am.

Randy Richardson’s “Havana Hangover is an irreverent genre-mashing story of chaos in motion. With elements of action, suspense, romance, mystery, political intrigue, drama, and tongue-in-cheek comedy this novel is going to be stuck to your palms while you ravenously flip pages from beginning to end. Its take-no-prisoners attitude and rapid-fire dialogue give it a fast-paced race to the finish feel.

It's obvious early in this novel that the author has good knowledge of and a great love for Cuba, and Havana in particular. His vivid descriptions show a town once considered a jewel of the Caribbean, and now a dowdy former beauty queen thanks to the greed, pride, and politics of several decades. But Havana’s true beauty is in her people, lovingly portrayed by Richardson. His well-written, vividly descriptive scenes put us right in the middle of sweltering Old Town Havana or riding in one of the infamous lead-sled classic cars from the late 50s remarkably “restored as only the mechanically creative Cubans can. Richardson’s readers hear, see, feel, smell, and taste the tropical beauty of this island nation. They also viscerally react to the dark nature of certain elements hiding within its crumbling infrastructure.

This novel touches base with readers in so many ways; from the characters to the storyline, the setting to the pace. It’s all wonderfully balanced in this surreal story of betrayal, distraction, deceit, and hope. Readers who enjoy thrillers, political intrigue, romance, comedy, action/adventure, mystery, or suspense novels will want to take this trip to Havana with Jackson and Tanner. Just be careful of the rum.

Havana Hangover by Randy Richardson
"At its core, "Havana Hangover" is a powerful exploration of friendship, betrayal, and the complexities of human relationships. Randy Richardson skillfully navigates the intricate dynamics between characters, delivering a narrative that is emotionally resonant and thought-provoking.

The central relationship between Tanner Ford and Jackson Swift is a focal point of the novel. Their friendship, once strong, is marred by betrayal and secrets. Richardson delves deep into the nuances of trust and loyalty, crafting characters who grapple with their own moral dilemmas and flaws. As the story unfolds, the evolution of their relationship is a compelling and realistic journey."
