Early this year I set out to find a very specific book on Indian History before the Mughals arrived and stumbled on this one. I don't think I have ever read another book with such deep focus and interest. I found myself constantly highlighting paragraphs (sometimes entire pages), writing long notes and ending up in deep rabbit holes as I further dived into topics that caught my interest.

It is very obvious that the author devoted his life to studying India and her history. The way he writes about this history and presents his thoughts about it with the utmost respect and objectivity is rare to find these days. The depth of knowledge he acquired about ancient Indian history, languages, literature, traditions, religion etc. is absolutely commendable and is something most Indians today seem to have forgotten. Parts of this book should be mandatory reading in Indian schools to remind us about the values of tolerance and togetherness our culture once taught us.

I would rate this book above a 5 if I could because of the way it treats the subject matter and makes for compulsive reading better than anything else I've read in recent times. ]]>
