This has got the be the most disgusting thing I've ever read. Absolutely vile! I am actually so impressed - and the atmosphere is vivid, and the prose is stunning, and it is just so damn emotional. ]]>

I was a bit afraid this would be the same as Nickel Boys but turns out you can write a different book on exactly the same themes just fine! Still a great story, still with the same flaws - all the characters are basically just caricatures of 'something bigger', having grand ideas and commenting on the society and its problems irregardless of whether it makes sense. This lends the book a distant feeling where I would rather see something more personal. ]]>

A very special book - for me, Sebald always succeeds in evocating this highly specific melancholic imagery - maybe it is indeed the use of photographs throughout (which I would ordinarily write off to be a gimmick).. And yet again here it was compounded with the many references to places that I am familiar with in the UK / Switzerland. ]]>
