I was a bit afraid this would be the same as Nickel Boys but turns out you can write a different book on exactly the same themes just fine! Still a great story, still with the same flaws - all the characters are basically just caricatures of 'something bigger', having grand ideas and commenting on the society and its problems irregardless of whether it makes sense. A very special book - for me, Sebald always succeeds in evocating this highly specific melancholic imagery - maybe it is indeed the use of photographs throughout (which I would ordinarily write off to be a gimmick).. And yet again here it was compounded with the many references to places that I am familiar with in the UK / Switzerland. ]]>
