"Stephen King returns to the crazed book fan trope in this novel, with Morris Bellamy becoming increasingly upset that his favorite author, John Rothstein, has taken lead character jimmy Gold in a direction Bellamy doesn't like.

So -- and this is not a spoiler, since it's right on the back of the book -- he kills Rothstein and steals numerous notebooks that he suspects contain more of Jimmy's story. He hides them, with a plan to collect them at a later time.

Then, he gets blind-stinking drunk, commits another serious crime during his blackout ... and lands in prison.

Cut forward many years, and young Pete Stauber finds the trunk full of books and money. His family is in desperate need, so he decides to help himself to the funds.

You guessed it: these two story lines run afoul of one another in fairly short order.

This is a tightly constructed thriller without the supernatural elements that so many of King's books contain. Instead, we find ourselves wondering whether skip-tracer and former police detective Bill Hodges will be able to stop Bellamy and protect Pete's family from a ruthless psychopath.
