i loved this !!!!! probably unsurprisingly - i love xiu xiu and also things that are sort of baldly absurd, like many of the encounters depicted in this book. a lot of it was written in a fairly straightforward way, but with fantastic, specific word choices that made the stories pop. rly visceral, very frank... "we highed a piscean five" is one of the sentences that i am gonna keep tucked in my brain ]]>

honestly this could be a standalone lol; i think a lot of its appeal is that we have no idea what is going on, and maybe never will. i really enjoyed it. i did spend some of the time wishing the main character was gay, but then i remembered that our wives under the sea exists so... ]]>

the parts of this that were good were very good (especially the scenes during some Pivotal Performances -- really great narrative framing there imo; probably some of the best writing in the book). loved the premise and Cherry's dirtbag tendencies tbh lol, as a staunch "let lesbians be huge messes" supporter. however, many chapters started with like Reflections About Clowning/Comedy, and while that makes sense when the world is being established, i found that it killed momentum after the first 1/3 of the novel, & there were so many frequent Internal Narrative Asides interspersed in active dialogue/conversations that it took me out of the scene(s). also, maybe this is because i read this book only over the course of a few days, but like, trust ur reader to remember the things u have set up about the world lol!! we KNOW that Cherry thinks "capitalism and art are bad bedfellows" (paraphrasing) because she has said it several! times! without building / expounding on it at all!

anyway i think part of the reason i have so many Opinions and Frustrations is that when the book was good it was very good!!!! and so i think with some tiny tweaks it could have been All Very Good!! ]]>

Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw
"I wondered why the rating was so low, and I guess I found out it's because this is an epically disappointing novella lmao. 😭 At the set-up stage, this was reminding me of a cross between a campy horror game and a more serious indie-horror. I thought some of the writing was very cool- (imperfectly recalled) "the spokes of his cheeks," or (of someone's eyes) "the lights were all on, and all the ghosts home, too." But the writing is so dense with this kind of metaphorical language, I felt there needed to be a balance of literal descriptions to cut through it. It was so fatiguing to wade through.

I also did not end up understanding the vision, or the point. Or why the characters behaved the way they did, or how they could be speaking the way they were, or why we needed a trite 4th wall breaking superciliousness thrown in there. I am so sleepy now."
