This may be my favorite book in the series so far. All the great action and mystery and entertainment of the other books can be found here, but Babylon’s Ashes is also very pensive. Like the Tolstoy quote in the epilogue, this book has a lot of food for deep thought about the nature of history.

Two of my favorite quotes sum it up:

“History, Michio believed, was a long series of surprises that seemed inevitable in retrospect.�

And, “History itself was a massive n=1 study, irreproducible. It was what made it so difficult to learn from.�
