"I have finished reading Untaken Three by C O Wyler. My mind is reeling from the fast-paced storyline and the depth of the characters.
I love how the book starts out from 17-year-old Hack’s perspective of living as an only child with his parents, who he seems to have very little in common with. I liked how the storyline was structured around how Hack had made a bad decision that embarrassed his father and changed their lives, which led them to relocate to live with his aunt and uncle on a small rural farm in Idaho, which caused his life to become isolated. It’s understandable how his entertainment comes from the internet and how he finds himself watching people online who are part of a high-tech reality-type show where individuals are implanted with AI tracking devices that monitor the world through the eyes of the implanted.
The story brings together the most unexpected individuals and intertwines their lives. I love Sarah and how she was a married pregnant woman when the rapture occurred and how she became angry after her husband and baby went missing. She’s trying to reason through what happened while her friends, Jeremy, Zoey, and Amir stick by her side. Sarah is much more complexed than she first appears. Wayne is an arrogant and sometimes disgusting character who brought global information to Hack through his AI implant, because of his new position with the charismatic and disturbingly captivating Mastema. The journey Sarah made was heartbreaking at times, while we watch her come to realize how horrible the program“Numan actually is and how she realizes she will never be free as long as she is a participant. Finding out how other innocent creatures were violated and used by Numan as tools to spy on unknowing individuals was deeply disturbing. It made me wonder what is currently being used to spy on us that we think is safe and private. It makes your imagination run wild.
I love how Sarah begins to read the Bible and starts to make sense of why so many people and all the children went missing. The betrayal she experienced by a deeply trusted friend after so many personal losses was infuriating. Watching Hack evolve from a teenager living with guilt from violating his dads employer, and not fitting into farm life, to becoming a responsible young man was heartwarming. He started to mature and grow and began to willingly participate in the responsibilities of his new life. He began to interact with his family more, and you can see his personal growth is making him a more positive person. When he makes his first contact with Sarah, you realize Hack is much stronger and heroic than anyone in his family knows. He puts himself out there to try to help complete strangers since he was the only one that could, because he knew more than he should after his intrusion into Numans system. The bond and trust that developed between Sarah and Hack and later with Jeremy and Amir was something I think we all wish we had with people we’ve known for years, let alone strangers who have rarely spoken to each other. It’s truly a testament of how God works in our lives and brings us together when it’s in His perfect timing.
Taken Three was exciting, thrilling, disturbing, fascinating, and inspiring. The AI angle was brilliant and so relevant to what is happening on a global scale today. As I read this book, I felt sad, shocked, relief, surprise, fear, anticipation, disappointment, empathy, anger, joy, loss, laughter, and so much more during my reading journey of Taken Three. The author knew how to tug at every emotion and kept me wanting more. I couldn’t put the book down and read this book faster than any other book! I am now starting to read Untaken and Untaken Too, which I indulged and bought the paperback versions. I love holding a book as I read! Do not hesitate to read this one! It's worth every minute!"
