Ça me parle.

Me voilà dans mon élément. ]]>

Of course I loved this story: much capable suburban kids romanticizing art move to the Big City to try to make it. Specially during some of the most tumultuous political times of the post-war era when the hippie revolution almost collapsed pro-war state power.

Yes, Patti writes without sentimentality and with reservation. And she writes about one of the most noble pursuits, art, in the shadows of the much famed Warhol's Factory, at the intersection of fame and authenticity.

But now I'm interested in what's been left out: why work for corporations? Sure we can romanticize French poets, but shouldn't we question pop stardom, disguised as rock n' roll authenticity? Patti Smith clearly keeps that to herself, further encrypting the secret ambitions of those who made it, and desecrating the aspirations of the unknown, left-out, underground artists (aka the unprivileged).
