This book taught me a lot about Korean history in the best way possible - from the perspective of a (fictional) character who experienced these historic and horrific events. It was also fascinating to learn about the Haenyeo female divers, and their culture. The gender role divide in that culture was particularly fascinating. The storyline and characters are just as compelling as the historical and sociological perspective.
