Gentle, warm, and thoughtful in slowly revealing the nature of "family".
Young Stan is a surprisingly good vehicle to help the protagonist, Joni, on her journey of discovery and acceptance following the death of her Nana.
Nana Phyllis, although deceased now, is the catalyst for bringing together this fractured family, with her array of kind and kooky friends, and her 'bonkers' week of challenges for her beloved family.
A delightful story that I read in a single sitting. ]]>

3.5 stars
Took me a long time to get into this story, but by halfway through (I had to persevere as it was a book club pick), I found a rhythm I could follow.
I never quite connected with the protagonist, but sympathised with her difficult life. However, Des, the retiring policeman, resonated with me. His dogged determination to see this last case through to its resolution was admirable, and he was a well rounded character.

I'm calling this a work of 'faction', but "Wifedom" is a blend of a number of genres, including biography with elements of autobiography/memoir.
Anna funder's research is meticulous - check out her many sources in the back matter - and she weaves it through the reveal of the marriage of two wonderful literary minds - Eileen and Eric Blair, otherwise known as George Orwell.
This book drew a great deal of discussion in my book club, both about the book, and about what makes a marriage then and now.
Highly recommended, but be prepared to feel angry again and again as you read. ]]>
