White Joyce gave 5 stars to The Counterfeit Countess: The Jewish Woman Who Rescued Thousands of Poles During the Holocaust (Hardcover) by Elizabeth B. White
An extraordinary story of an ordinary woman whose courage, compassion, resilience, and intelligence led to her saving thousands of people during the Holocaust. When I was in school, we were taught a lot about the Holocaust. Several of my teachers were survivors of the concentration camps and it was the mission of the schools to make sure we knew about history so it would never be repeated. We never learned about Majdanek and those that tried to help the prisoners there, however. I'm of Polish decent, so this story was of particular interest to me. It's a tough book to get through given the subject matter. I had to read it a few pages at a time. There's one particular image in the book that I'm sure I'll be haunted by for the rest of my life, so be forewarned. That being said, it's a book worth reading and should be read by everyone. It's surmised that Janina (the Counterfeit Countess) wrote this book in response to the anti-Semitism in Poland in the 1960s, to accusations that some of the jewish people were selfish and only cared about saving themselves rather than the suffering of others. Janina, obviously, was not one of them. As she says, if surviving meant being useful to many, then she had to find the strength to survive. But, she also says that "none of us has the right to sit in judgment" of those the anti-Semites deemed selfish. "No one who hasn't been in their shoes." Let's hope that no one will ever be "in their shoes" ever again! ]]>
