bookshelves: 2023
This book is a collection of metaphysical philosophies and rules for moral conduct. In a lot of ways, I found this book to be very similar to Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. However, the Tao Te Ching is a bit more accessible and simple than Meditations.

The book is mostly accessible, with a few bits of vocabulary that may be new to even advanced readers. The prose is very simple and easy to follow. I'm sure the poetic nature of the Tao Te Ching helps with the simplicity of the flow, but different translations may also have an affect for English readers.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Eastern philosophy, anyone who is interested in ethics, or readers who are into poetic prose. ]]>

DNF. Meditations is a list of things that Marcus Aurelius thought were important and guiding moral principles he wanted to live by. Many of his common inspirational quotes were derived from the insights he jotted down in his journals. I think that outlining your own moral code is a very valuable and useful tool in living a meaningful and fulfilling life. Marcus Aurelius's success as a leader and influential philosopher is evidence that he view of life is valuable not only to himself but to the many readers of his diary.

As a translated ancient text, the book is not easy to read. However, by comparison to other translated literature, this is quite accessible. Much of the book is formatted as lists, which was likely Aurelius's method of organizing his thoughts and moral rules.

I wouldn't really recommend this book to anyone as those who will be interested in the book will find it. But there aren't many people who aren't looking for this book that I think would greatly benefit from it or enjoy it. ]]>

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
"This basically consists of Marcus Aurelius repeating, "Get it together, Marcus" to himself over and over again over the course of 12 chapters.

SPOILER ALERT:
-The time during which you are alive is very very brief compared to the time during which you did not exist and will not exist.
-People who wrong you only do so from ignorance, and if you can correct them without being a jerk about it, you should do so.
-You are a little soul dragging around a corpse.
-Whether or not things injure you lies in your opinion about them, and you can control that opinion.

That's about it.

The fascinating thing about these philosophical ideas is that if they were expressed a single time, they might seem profound and solid and convincing. But repeated over and over like a rosary, you feel that Marcus is struggling against really serious grueling daily doubt -- that these are things that he wishes to be true, not things that he knows to be true, normative rather than descriptive statements. Which makes for a fascinating and subtext-y read, especially given his history. "

bookshelves: 2023
Own the day is Aubrey Marcus's sincere contribution to the world. You may not agree with every aspect of what Marcus believes constitutes the perfect day, but it is obvious to me that he believes it with his whole heart. The book is well-research and well composed, making it an accessible central source for making your life better and doing it today. I genuinely believe that most people could greatly improve their lives by following the principles in this book alone.

The book is easy to read, though readers who are averse to curse words may not enjoy the book. Aubrey has a no-nonsense writing style that can be a bit abrasive for those who are not also "bros."

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to be more productive, anyone who is looking to find meaning in their life and is having a hard time with taking a first step in any direction, anyone who is looking to be more healthy in many aspects, any anyone who is looking for general motivation in their life (David Goggins fans would love this one). ]]>

Gibson Kekoa gave 4 stars to Recovering from Emotionally Immature Parents: Practical Tools to Establish Boundaries & Reclaim Your Emotional Autonomy (Paperback) by Lindsay C. Gibson
A practical read for people who navigate relationships with emotionally immature people.

Gibson writes about the types of interactions that occur when maintaining relationships with people who are unable to meet you emotionally. The majority of the book deals with parent-child relationships, but many of the interactions detailed are common in other types of relationships.

This book stands out from many therapy-oriented reads in that it doesn't rely heavily on clinical anecdotes. Gibson talks generally about familiar and relatable interactions and several potential tactics the reader could take in such situations. I personally found these solutions both generally intuitive yet also encouraging for the average reader.

The book is very accessible to any reader. There will be some terminology, but within context, and especially with some guidance of a therapist, the reader should have no problem navigating the content.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationships and communication, anyone interested in contemporary topics in therapy, and of course self-help junkies. ]]>

This book is one of the best and most influential books I have ever read. At its core, the Will to Change is a book that makes the damaging effects of patriarchy clear, particularly as they relate to the male experience as an often overlooked aspect of patriarchy. The problematic nature of coopting concepts from Feminism to discuss men's issues is not lost on me, nor on the author. However, I don't know of any book that is more effective in convincing men to become active and engaged allies in the Feminist movement than this book. This book is a call to action for intersectionality in Feminism.

The book is accessible, though some concepts may be difficult for younger readers or those who are less familiar with topics in Feminism and sociology. Much of the book speaks to individual experiences that are generalized and relatable, but moves into sociological phenomena at times.

I would recommend this book to anyone with negative views on Feminism, anyone who would like to expand their knowledge of feminism, and any man. ]]>

This is an excellent book about the way we view and use time. At a high level, this book addresses the common views and platitudes about the woes of time and challenges them by using a novel framework by which we view time. It doesn't change the physical relationship we have with time, but it changed the way I view that relationship, which has allowed me to engage more deeply in my life.

The book is mostly accessible, at least being very relatable in the opening and introduction to each chapter and principle. However, some of the prose does extend into concepts, topics, and grammar that may be a bit difficult to follow and engage with for younger readers.

I would recommend this book to hippies, people who like to see common views challenged, and folks who are interested in social phenomena. ]]>

Leadership and Self-Deception is one of those classic leadership and self-help books. The principles that it teaches (primarily self-justification and blaming being resolved by treating people kindly) are foundational to relationships in every aspect of life, not just leadership.

The writing style of this book is super accessible, taking the form of a platonic dialog. The symbols and context around the books are starting to show their age, but are still accessible and relevant now.

I would recommend this book to literally everyone, but particularly to folks who wish to be good leaders or communicators and people who would like to improve the ways they show up in relationships. ]]>
