bookshelves: fiction
Reading this a decade after my first time at 22 was illuminating? I loved it back then, as I felt like Eggers was speaking directly to my young, self-important brain.

This time reading it was more layered, complicated. I still admire the book’s ambition, rawness, but this time around I was more attuned to how much the confidence in the voice feels like a mask. Beneath it there is real pain - a young man thrust into parenthood, trying to grieve while keeping everything together.

I noticed how often the narrative takes wild detours or cracks jokes just as things are starting to genuinely vulnerable. It started to feel like a hyper self-conscious defence mechanism and wore me out a little.

That’s not a knock on the writing, and it actually deepened my empathy. Maybe the performance is the vulnerability?

Some parts haven’t aged well, with many stretches feeling self-indulgent or off-key now. But I get why I loved it then and I appreciate it differently now. ]]>
