Nostalgic coming of age story sent in the 70s, in Ashiya. In usual Ogawa style - there are tensions underlying the relationships - which goes into making the childhood memory charming yet dark. ]]>

bookshelves: greek-lit, feminist-lit
The last and third of the Greek anthology and the retelling of the post Trojan wars from the eyes of women. Again, evocative and readable, and putting a focus on the trauma of rape as a tool fo war, and the women survivors, their coping strategies. This 3rd story is centered around Clytemnestra, the wife of Agamemnon, who sacrificed his daughter for the favourable winds so that the Greeks could sail for Troy. Clytemnestra suffers this tragic loss and seeks revenge, that loss in war from the eyes of women is different from just the ways in which history and mythology record it. ]]>

bookshelves: women-s-lit
This was another lyrical re-imagining of the life of the women during the Trojan war. For me personally the Silence of the Girls was a far more vivid retelling, but this was as interesting. From the perspective of women captured during war, part of the 'loot', and who were then treated as both slaves, and concubines of the victors of the war. Briseis, is carrying the child of Achilles. ]]>

bookshelves: non-fiction, philosophy
This is a seminal book that is critical for all liberal activists to read on how dopplegangers and the mirror world are taking up language and space in current politics. Klein unpacks for us many of the challenges activists are facing in order to legitimise and make credible our claims in the current scenario esp in the online/ virtual 'communications' world. Klein offers food for thought for self-critique and improvements - and how to shift gears. ]]>
