I finally got around to reading this. I haven't seen the musical but I saw the first movie of the musical based on this book and decided it was time. It took a while for a copy to become available to borrow, and then it took me a while to read it.
I think it is really interesting how this was interpreted for stage and screen. The book is not light and there is no sense of defying gravity. Sex, complicated adult relationships, politics, and betrayal abound. I liked the storyline about Animals / animals but really wanted more. I was disappointed by how little ink was spent on the flying Monkeys. We all know how its going to end, and as soon as Dorothy came on the scene, very late in the book, it felt like a mad dash to the inevitable. I'm glad I read it but not sure if I'll spend any more time with Maguire's further books in the realm. I definitely enjoyed it much more than my foray (several decades ago) into Baum's original books beyond the Wizard of Oz. ]]>

a 12 year old navigates water shortages and economic disparities in modern Mumbai. this year's book for norwood's literary lunch (a multi-generational gathering at the middle school)
it will be interesting to learn how much the cultural references to food and holidays impacted the reading experiences of the norwood youth I'll talk with tomorrow. an easy read, I think this is a good introduction to life in pretty extreme poverty, that doesn't sugar coat things but also doesn't sensationalize the situation. bonus: there's a sweet dog who survives to the end of the book - yay! ]]>

This series is not following a chronological order, so you can jump in at any point. This is the youngest Marty Hench story so far. It starts while he's in college and just getting into digital forensic accounting. He gets involved with a company founded by a rabbi, a priest, and a Mormon elder, falls in love at a Dead Kennedys show, and so much more. If you love stories about social change and building community, with a technological component, check this out. ]]>

A model for all other novellas, this quick read is set off the coast of Lagos, Nigeria in a tower after most of the world has flooded. Class consciousness meets African folklore. I need to seek out more by this Nommo Award-winning author! ]]>
