There are parts of ‘Making Sense of the World that I would rate five stars, but there are many others, particularly those dealing with the metaphysical, where I found the attempt to confirm or prove the existence of a Triune Being using metaphysical categories of reality lacking—and, in some cases, really difficult to follow. I don’t mean to be snarky, but there were moments when I found myself struggling to make sense of the book itself. ]]>

What an excellent book. James A. Haldane (1768-1851) was a Scottish theologian. he began in the ministry as a paedobaptist. He wrote this book in 1809 detailing the reasons why he changed his views and practice from infant baptism to credobaptism. He highlights how paedobaptists insist on their misunderstanding of the word “baptize (immersion) and dismiss the historical practice of immersion.

He proves by scripture who the proper subjects of baptism should be: professing Christians. He then tackles the common arguments made by paedobaptists related to the claim of the analogy of the Old Covenant with the New, and shows the deficiency.

At the same time, his tone in the book is of gentleness and love as to attempt maintaining unity among the brethren. The last chapter is a fine statement on how to maintain love and charity.

The book I have contains printing mishaps, but all in all - I’d say it is a must read for any credobaptist who wishes to strengthen their faith, and perhaps a good book for a paedobaptist who is open to engaging with scriptural and historical evidence. ]]>

With the exception of 2 sentences on baptism 😜, this is an excellent book.

Highlights:
- great for premarital and marital counseling journeys
- pastoral, biblical, practical
- husband and wife roles clearly articulated
- role of parents and pastors/church explained
- end of chapter discussion guide to facilitate great conversation and foster communication

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this and will make this one of my top recommended pre-marital books. ]]>
