Fascinating speculative middle, meh end

I really enjoyed the progress of humanity described but was fairly bored by the Last Man section, which felt like it was trying too hard to be loftily philosophical (for perhaps valid "plot" reasons). Enough that i found myself skipping entire pages.

Worth it for the middle though

really liked it
I stumbled on this book accidentally when searching Libby for Jorge Luis Borges. The premise intrigued me so I put it on my list to read after Labyrinths. That paid off as it sort of inhabits the same space as Borges' stories, but more "reachable." I enjoyed the take on Holmes and the interaction with other real and imagined people. ...more
