I liked the shift in the focus of the main character's affections - this is not the cheeezy romance novel I thought it was going to be. Nicely written, quick read - but I'll probably forget about it in five year's time.

I’ve never had a book make me start sobbing at the end - not for good things. An account of a family’s experience of Hurricane Katrina, it spirals into an (un)believably dark place, but the final chapters are full of hope for the future of our country. This book was written in 2009; reading it at the end of 2024, knowing that that hope has been destroyed and the darkness that Zeitoun experienced is coming for the whole country is heartbreaking. B
