How Big Things Get Done by Bent Flyvbjerg

Matthew’s first review of the year

liked it
The anecdotes are interesting and the data is useful, but the only thing really surprising is that the failure rate for large projects is probably even greater than you imagined. The heuristics for success are probably already familiar to experience project managers, but moving from the heuristics to practice is the real challenge.

Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari

Matthew’s last review of the year

did not like it
Yuval Noah Harari’s Nexus tackles urgent questions about information and the existential risks of AI. Unfortunately, it fell short of the expectation I had based on the number of reading list I saw it on. The book is a bit of a mess with the first half being a cherry-picked history to support Harari’s claim that simply having more information isn’t a net good on its own. Besides being a bit contentious, it makes the overall narrative too long. Ho ...more
