Not for those faint of heart.
鈥楢 cat鈥檚 cradle鈥� addresses child鈥檚 rape and leads us into the mind not only of the rapist, but also of the little girl, Mary, who seeking friendship, becomes the victim. The author also describes in detail the characters of the Mary鈥檚 family and of the villagers, where she lives.
The rapist, Ralph, returns to the village where he was born and his mother still lives, after fourteen years鈥� imprisonment for the rape of a Not for those faint of heart.

The rapist, Ralph, returns to the village where he was born and his mother still lives, after fourteen years鈥� imprisonment for the rape of a young girl, Sonia, from the very same village. His mother does not welcome him and sends him away but he comes back anyway, every weekend when he鈥檚 not working.
Mary has started a new school and the girls in her class ignore her. Her father has left the family home without leaving word of where he is. He sends a weekly envelope with some money for the housekeeping, but it is not enough. Her two older brothers get out of hand without firm rules, or consequences for breaking them. Her mother is at her wit鈥檚 end, and matters are made worse when she has to ask her own mother for financial help. The grandmother decides to visit them and take the matter into her own hands. Mary鈥檚 brothers are sent out to play every Saturday afternoon and told to take Mary with them and look after her. The three children soon reach an agreement that the boys play alone and meet Mary at 5 PM to go home together.
This is when Mary finally finds who she believes to be a good friend, Ralph. The page turning drama, full of tension, keeps the reader holding breath, until the inevitable happens.
However, the story does not end here. The author describes issues at the edges of psychiatry, crime and personal trauma. The novel culminates in the village children setting fire to Ralph鈥檚 mother鈥檚 house. Ralph rescues Mary and is celebrated by many as a hero. Alone Sonia鈥檚 family, refused to forgive the severely injured Ralph.
The description of the rape was very detailed and for me, much too graphic. I felt disturbed.
All in all, the first half was full of suspense leading up, to what the reader knew was coming. The characters of Mary, her family, Ralph and the villagers were realistically described and the reader could get involved in life in a small village. As only to expect from the author, Carly Rheilan, it was written impeccably.

I think this book will be enjoyed by keen readers of psychological thrillers.
