Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo

Dinah’s first review of the year

it was amazing
Couldn't put this one down. Refreshing to read a novella that was exactly right as a novella - the story couldn't have sustained much more, and the arc unfolded just as it should have. (I suspect this may be true for most pandemic stories, even ones like Feed Them Hunger that channel only the feeling of lockdown, absent any explicit connection through setting or theme.)

The story is a grim one - a scientist chasing corporate funding for a neuro-te

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Dinah’s last review of the year

it was ok
Idk why I found this one such a slog, when fundamentally it’s not much different than the previous two! Maybe it’s that the characters had problems which, for the most part, could be solved by talking frankly to each other and/or a therapist, and that never seemed to occur to even one of them! Maybe the drag of it all does mirror something about millennial dating, but I still don’t think we deserve it from Rooney.
