it was ok
I must be dense or hide-bound but I didnt share the broad praise for this book - from academics/news prints and other readers - others have voiced. The book is full of surmising and speculation when, as is often the case, facts or support are missing. Particularly bad on why Donne switched away from Catholicism, very important considering his Sermons are some of the most important in English ever delivered and he was Dean of St. Paul's. really liked it
This plainspun story told about a Reno never-made-it but peer respected country and casino singer song writer at the margins of any place he happens to be and hanging on by threads is one with the low ache of the many country title songs listed, heroic like an epic catalogue of ships, but dirt and dusty like many miles out of town in the desert or by motels.
