Orwell really knows how to make you feel good about eating pigs if you hadn't already. Whenever an author can make even the most politically disinterested of people (not myself) fervently engaged then they done a great work. This book is very eventful, with turn plot twist you wouldn't quite see coming; unless you're somehow aware of the history behind the fairy-story.

What better way to start my year than with an imaginary trip through hell and into heaven?
There is a saying from a pastor here in Dallas, Tx that goes 'what in hell do you want when heaven has all that you need?'. Indeed, C. S. Lewis invites us all to ask the same as he explores that question through a cast of hellish phantoms and heavenly spirits.
From preface to book end the author does an excellent job at letting the reader know that he's not What better way to start my year than with an imaginary trip through hell and into heaven?

From preface to book end the author does an excellent job at letting the reader know that he's not intended to write a treatise for anyone to build their doctrine off of; so don't go supplementing reading the bible for this. This is a work of fiction. With the detail Lewis gives to near all of the characters, you're left feeling as though you've read a work of psychology also. Somewhere along the way you'll surely find one or more of these characters hanging on to a recess of hell (or earth), that you yourself may recognize. Let it be in you or another, a read of this book might help you expose and/or confront such a thing. Relevant today and for all time we see aspects of our human nature that can and cannot be carried up to heaven with us.
I most notably recall Lewis' distinction between the action of pity and the passion of it. He says, "The action of Pity will live for ever: but the passion of Pity will not. The passion of Pity, the Pity we merely suffer, the ache that draws men to concede what should what should not be conceded and to flatter when they should speak truth...that will die."
I find this line memorable not only because it is well written but well placed, giving phrase to a trouble we've many faced; the weaponization of Pity.

In this book we see a man's lust a lesser obstacle to heaven than a mothers love; we see a painter, more concerned with his ability to paint heaven than his ability to even see it truly; we see a woman so self absorbed that she'd rather suffer hell than allow anyone to see her as she is, even God; and in the end we're left to ponder, or to ponder lesser, the reality of time as it exist in the heavens and on earth; and further wrapped within that is our ability to choose our own salvation even. So, whether your withdrawal from his may be theological or simply more intrinsic to you human nature and experiences, in this work of imagination may see a character face with your same resignation head on.
