really liked it
I think the best way to summarise this is that is it showing how two very different families, each with their own obsession, try to find a way to prosper in a turbulent 21st Century. The Hopelands are trying to build a multinational 'family' where kinship is based on choosing to join the family rather than any biological connection while the Brightbournes are trying to create things that will last for generations. This is the fourth in his series of prequels set in the Malazan world that cover some of the key events in the formation of the Malazan Empire. This is set a few decades after the previous book in the series which portrayed some of the biggest events in the history of that Empire, I had felt that book was disappointing since it felt too rushed for some of the things it was describing.
